Design
The Epomaker Shadow-S feels pretty solid, but it’s primarily made from plastic. It still manages to weigh just slightly over 900g, which might actually be beneficial. Eight visible hex screws, which fit a H2.0 Wowstick bit, hold the grey/silver top shell and the pink bottom shell together. 
The top plastic layer appears somewhat prone to small scuffs around the edges. I haven’t been gentle with it, often throwing it in a backpack while moving between locations. The surface finish closely resembles aluminum but with a coarser grain, which I’m pretty sure is just paint. Tolerances are generally excellent, with no discernible gaps or flaws in the construction. The OLED sits tightly on the top, though the protective window is slightly raised, and the alignment between it and the plastic underneath is slightly off.
A low-angle shot shows the Ctrl, Shift, Caps Lock, and Tab keys of the keyboard. Shift and Caps Lock are being held down by their left edges. Shift remains level, while Caps Lock tilts noticeably to the left. The stabilizers in the Shift key function well, but the switches aren’t very stable on their own, making Caps Lock a bit wobbly.
The hot-swappable switches live up to their name. You can remove the keycaps and then the switches, though sometimes the switch comes out with the keycap. I prefer this to more difficult-to-remove switches (I always forget which way to use the switch puller). The spacebar left/right shift, enter, and backspace keys all have captive stabilizer bars connected to dummy switches. These work well, and for example, left shift has much less horizontal slack than Caps Lock. Despite the noise, it feels pretty great to type on.
Display
The 1.14-inch smart screen stands out as a highlight of the Shadow-S. Users can program this display to customize the keyboard in unexpected ways, displaying GIFs, personal logos, or motivational sayings. This feature adds more than just aesthetic appeal; it enables a level of customization that makes each keyboard unique.
Customization
The Epomaker Shadow-S stands out from the competition due to its compatibility with VIA software. VIA, the community-based software, allows for complete keyboard customization. Switches
The linear “Wysteria” switches that come with the Shadow S are marketed as “silent,” but their low actuation force and lack of a mechanism to prevent bottoming out make the typing experience loud and clackety in an unintentional manner, contrasting with deliberately clicky switches. The sound of keys bottoming out is largely determined by typing force, and I tend to type heavily, further accentuating this noise. 
This contradicts Epomakers’ claim that the keyboard maximally reduces noise. The Endgame Gear KB65HE, currently under testing with Gateron KS-37B switches that feel similar, is significantly quieter due to a substantial amount of damping material. While the key rattle aligns with the early 90s aesthetic of the Shadow S, if a quiet keyboard is desired, the Shadow S falls short of that expectation.
Typing Experience
The Epomaker Shadow-S delivers an exceptional typing experience with its five layers of damping foam. This innovative design includes sandwich foam, IXPE switch pads, acoustic pads, bottom sponge, and silicone layers. Each key press feels smooth, responds promptly, and produces a pleasant sound, transforming typing into a true symphony.
