    How Does Netflix Detect VPN?

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonSeptember 25, 2021
Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

In the streaming media space, Netflix is a leading provider of services. However, Netflix shows aren’t available in every country. Netflix offers a variety of television shows, film, and documentary options based on the region. Despite the majority of shows remaining the same, you can still access a few due to your location.

There are numerous reasons why people use VPNs, including accessing blocked video content. The VPNs that bypass Netflix deduction will be blocked until they figure out which belongs to them.

VPN servers in the regional area allow customers to access content that is restricted in that area. Using this method, Netflix deceives consumers into receiving the content they crave by hiding their actual location.

    How Netflix Identifies VPN Connections?

Through VPNs, Netflix is tricked into believing that your IP address is in another country, region, or city. In this regard, Netflix is fully aware. Netflix is well aware that many of its users use VPNs to watch shows unavailable in their country. Due to this, they are always hunting for IP addresses with such characteristics to reduce VPN usage.

Netflix has increased its security to a level where it detects VPN usage. The Netflix database contains information about IP addresses in a predetermined manner. In addition to IP addresses associated with VPNs, Netflix probably has a tool that analyses and reports on them.

Below are some methods Netflix uses to detect VPN connections.

    1. Finding Shared IP Addresses

An IP address behind a VPN can often be shared between many people. Therefore, Netflix notices a lot of traffic from the same IP address when you use a VPN, so they can quickly determine that it’s a VPN and block the connection. Those VPNs with a limited number of servers and IP addresses have to worry about this.

Your Geolocation Is Known to Netflix

Netflix uses alternative methods to establish your location, even if your VPN displays that you’re in another country. It is your billing address that is the most crucial factor in this case. It is possible to assume you’re using a VPN if your billing address is in New Jersey for your subscription and you originate your traffic from Berlin.

Furthermore, your browser can provide them with large amounts of information about you. As soon as you sign in to Netflix and start watching a movie, Netflix keeps track of whether you are using a VPN. When you change your location using a VPN, Netflix notices there’s a discrepancy.

As soon as Netflix blocks an IP address, VPN services with the highest profit margins can immediately buy replacement addresses. Smaller, less well-known providers aren’t as fortunate, which is why so many of them cannot access Netflix regions where they previously could.

    Monitoring VPN Providers’ IP Addresses

Netflix will almost certainly preserve a database of previously detected IP addresses for VPN connections. This means they will ban the IP addresses associated with the once-discovered VPNs. If your VPN service doesn’t keep its addresses up to date, you won’t be able to stream Netflix videos from another country.

    Through DNS Server-Location Mismatches

Whenever you stream Netflix on another device, it determines which location uses a VPN and which one does not. In addition, Netflix apps can ignore your DNS settings, which determines your IP address instead of the one provided by Netflix’s servers. The result of this is the disclosure of your actual IP address.

After it has been discovered that you are using a VPN, it will prevent you from accessing some or all of your Netflix content. You can change the network settings of your device if you are experiencing VPN issues.

These are ways that Netflix can determine whether you are using a VPN to stream restricted content in your area.

Why Does Netflix Block and Detect VPN Servers?

Perhaps you are wondering why Netflix doesn’t show certain content in different parts of the world. Moreover, why does Netflix look for users using VPNs to access content that’s not available so hard?

Simply put, Netflix does not want you to see content that isn’t available in your area! It’s because Netflix makes money from limited-access content it streams.

Copyright holders are not paid when their content is streamed from an unlicensed region. The result is that when Netflix does not prohibit VPN users, the company suffers a severe financial loss.

    Conclusion

Since Netflix assures that local IP addresses traced back to VPNs are blocked, there’s no need to worry. VPN providers are constantly updating their systems. There are plans to develop new methods to circumvent Netflix’s VPN ban so that you can once again access regionally-specific content.
