How to Clear Safari Cookie Data on an iPhone: Step-by-Step Guide

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonAugust 10, 2026

Safari cookies help websites remember your preferences, login sessions, shopping carts, and browsing settings. While cookies can improve the browsing experience, accumulated cookie data may sometimes cause issues such as slow browsing, website errors, outdated page information, or login problems.

If you want to improve Safari performance, protect your privacy, or troubleshoot website issues, clearing Safari’s cookie data on your iPhone can be a useful solution.

This guide explains how to delete Safari cookies and website data on an iPhone.

Why Clear Safari Cookies on an iPhone?

Before deleting cookies, it is helpful to understand what they do.

Safari cookies are small data files stored by websites on your device. They help websites:

    • Remember login information
    • Save language preferences
    • Keep shopping carts active
    • Customize content recommendations
    • Improve browsing speed

However, cookies can also build up over time and may cause:

    • Websites loading incorrectly
    • Login problems
    • Excessive storage usage
    • Privacy concerns
    • Outdated website settings

Clearing cookies removes stored website information and allows Safari to create fresh data when you revisit websites.

Method 1: Clear All Safari Cookies and Website Data

The easiest way to remove Safari cookie data is through the iPhone Settings app.

    Step 1: Open Settings

Find and open the Settings app on your iPhone.

    Step 2: Open Safari Settings

    Scroll down and tap:

    Settings → Apps → Safari

(On some older iOS versions, Safari may appear directly in the main Settings list.)

Step 3: Clear History and Website Data

    Scroll down and tap:

    Clear History and Website Data

    A confirmation window will appear.

    Tap:

    Clear History and Data

    After completion, Safari will remove:

    • Browsing history
    • Cookies
    • Website cache
    • Other browsing data

Method 2: Delete Cookies Without Removing Browsing History

If you want to keep your Safari history but remove cookies, use the advanced website data settings.

    Step 1: Open Safari Settings

    Go to:

    Settings → Apps → Safari

    Step 2: Enter Advanced Settings

    Scroll down and select:

    Advanced → Website Data

Here you can view all stored website data on your iPhone.

    Step 3: Remove Website Data

    You have two options:

    Delete All Website Data

    Tap:

    Remove All Website Data

This clears cookies and stored website information from all websites.

    Delete Data from Specific Websites

Find a website in the list and:

    1. Swipe left on the website name
    2. Tap Delete

This removes cookies only from that specific website.

Method 3: Block Cookies in Safari

If you want to prevent websites from storing cookies in the future, Safari provides a cookie-blocking option.

    Steps:

    1. Open Settings
    2. Tap Apps
    3. Select Safari
    4. Enable:

    Block All Cookies

Safari will then prevent websites from saving cookies.

However, keep in mind that blocking all cookies may affect website functionality.

    Some websites may:

    • Fail to remember login information
    • Require repeated sign-ins
    • Display incorrectly

For most users, allowing cookies while regularly clearing unnecessary data provides a better balance between privacy and convenience.

Method 4: Clear Safari Data Directly from Safari App

Safari also provides a quick way to clear browsing data.

    Steps:

    1. Open the Safari app
    2. Tap the Bookmarks icon at the bottom
    3. Select the History tab
    4. Tap Clear
    5. Choose a time range:
    • Last hour
    • Today
    • Today and yesterday
    • All history

This method removes browsing history and related website data depending on your settings.

What Happens After Clearing Safari Cookies?

After deleting Safari cookie data, you may notice:

You Are Logged Out of Websites

Websites that previously remembered your account may require you to sign in again.

    Examples:

    • Email accounts
    • Social media platforms
    • Shopping websites

    Website Preferences Are Reset

    Saved settings such as:

    • Language choices
    • Theme preferences
    • Location permissions

may need to be configured again.

    Websites May Load Fresh Data

Clearing cookies can fix issues caused by outdated stored information.

    Does Clearing Cookies Delete Passwords?

    No.

Clearing Safari cookies does not automatically remove passwords saved in iCloud Keychain.

Your saved passwords remain available unless you manually delete them from:

    Settings → Passwords

However, you may be signed out of websites because login session cookies have been removed.

How Often Should You Clear Safari Cookies?

There is no fixed schedule for clearing cookies.

Most users only need to clear Safari data when:

    • A website is not working correctly
    • Safari becomes unusually slow
    • Storage usage increases
    • You want to remove old website tracking data

For privacy-focused users, clearing cookies every few weeks or months may be preferred.

Tips to Keep Safari Running Smoothly

Besides clearing cookies, you can improve Safari performance with these tips:

    Keep iOS Updated

Install the latest iOS updates to receive Safari improvements and security fixes.

    Remove Unused Website Data

Instead of deleting everything, remove data from websites you no longer use.

    Use Private Browsing

Safari Private Browsing prevents Safari from saving:

    • Browsing history
    • Search history
    • Some tracking information

    To enable it:

    1. Open Safari
    2. Tap the Tabs button
    3. Select Private

    Manage Safari Extensions

Too many extensions can affect browser performance. Remove extensions you no longer need.

    Final Thoughts

Clearing Safari cookie data on an iPhone is a simple way to troubleshoot browsing problems, free up stored website data, and improve privacy.

    For a complete cleanup, use:

Settings → Apps → Safari → Clear History and Website Data

If you only want to remove cookies while keeping your browsing history, use:

Settings → Apps → Safari → Advanced → Website Data

Regularly managing Safari cookies helps keep your iPhone browsing experience faster, cleaner, and more secure.
