Huawei MatePad Mini 2 Leak: 5G, 12GB RAM and What We Know So Far

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonOctober 2, 2026

Huawei MatePad Mini 2 could become one of Huawei’s most interesting compact-tablet upgrades if the latest leak is accurate. The rumored second-generation model is expected to retain the portable MatePad Mini concept while adding 5G connectivity and potentially offering up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

The biggest change is not simply the move to a new generation. A 5G connection would give the MatePad Mini 2 a different role from a typical Wi-Fi-only tablet, allowing users to stay connected without depending on public Wi-Fi or a smartphone hotspot.

Huawei has not officially announced the MatePad Mini 2, so its processor, battery, display specifications, cameras, charging technology and final configurations remain unknown. The information currently available comes from leaks and regulatory-related reports and should therefore be treated as preliminary.

Here is what the current MatePad Mini 2 leak tells us, what remains unknown, and how the rumored upgrades could change Huawei’s compact-tablet strategy.

Huawei MatePad Mini 2 Expected Before the End of 2026

The latest leak suggests that Huawei is targeting a before-year-end launch for the MatePad Mini 2.

While an exact release date has not been revealed, the reported regulatory filing indicates that development of the device may already have reached an advanced stage.

The addition of 5G tablets support could also become one of the key selling points of the new compact tablet. Instead of being limited to Wi-Fi networks, a cellular-enabled version could provide internet access in more situations, particularly for users who frequently travel or work away from home.

Reported Huawei MatePad Mini 2 Configurations

The leak also provides early information about the potential storage and color options.

The Huawei MatePad Mini 2 is reportedly expected to be available in several colors, including:

    • Xiahua Purple
    • Obsidian Black
    • Snowfield White
    • Midnight Black
    • Floating Light White

The reported memory and storage configurations include:

    • 8GB + 256GB
    • 12GB + 256GB
    • 12GB + 512GB

If these configurations are accurate, Huawei could offer the second-generation compact tablet with substantially more storage flexibility, particularly for users who want to keep large numbers of apps, documents, photos and media files on the device.

What We Know About the Current MatePad Mini

The first-generation Huawei MatePad Mini was launched in September 2025 and is currently offered in multiple versions, including a standard model, a Reading Edition and a Soft Light Display Edition.

The existing MatePad Mini features an 8.8-inch OLED display with a 2560 × 1600 resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio.

The screen uses a punch-hole design with extremely narrow 2.99mm four-sided bezels, giving the tablet an approximately 92% OLED tablets screen-to-body ratio.

The display also supports a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR dynamic display with a claimed peak brightness of up to 1,800 nits.

These specifications give the current MatePad Mini a display configuration that is considerably more advanced than what is typically found on smaller tablets.

Satellite Messaging and M-Pencil Pro Support

The current MatePad Mini also includes several connectivity and productivity features.

Huawei’s compact tablet supports two-way BeiDou satellite messaging, allowing compatible messages to be sent and received through the BeiDou satellite system in supported scenarios.

It is also notable for introducing Lingxi communication technology to Huawei’s tablet lineup, according to the available product information.

For users who want to use the MatePad Mini for note-taking, drawing or other creative tasks, the tablet is compatible with the Huawei M-Pencil Pro stylus.

It remains unclear whether all of these features will carry over to the MatePad Mini 2 or whether Huawei will introduce additional connectivity and productivity upgrades.

A Smaller Tablet With 5G Could Target Mobile Users

The rumored 5G capability could be particularly important for the MatePad Mini 2.

Compact tablets occupy a different position from larger 11-inch or 12-inch models. Their smaller dimensions make them easier to carry, while a cellular connection can further reduce dependence on public Wi-Fi or smartphone hotspot connections. If you are considering a smaller Android tablet, our guide to the best large-screen Android tablets explains how display size, battery capacity and performance affect the buying decision.

If Huawei combines the compact form factor of the MatePad Mini with 5G connectivity, higher-memory configurations and an upgraded display, the second-generation model could become a more capable option for users who want a portable tablet for reading, communication, entertainment and light productivity.

However, Huawei has yet to reveal the processor, battery capacity, charging specifications, camera hardware or display details of the MatePad Mini 2.

Why 5G Could Be the MatePad Mini 2’s Biggest Upgrade

The rumored 5G support could matter more than a simple processor upgrade because it changes how a compact tablet can be used outside the home.

The first-generation MatePad Mini already targets users who want a smaller device than a conventional 11-inch tablet. Its compact size makes it easier to carry for reading, navigation, communication, entertainment and light productivity. Adding cellular connectivity would remove one of the main limitations of a Wi-Fi-only tablet: the need to find a wireless network or share a phone’s connection.

For commuters, travelers and people who regularly work away from a fixed Wi-Fi connection, a 5G-enabled compact tablet could be more convenient than carrying a larger tablet and constantly switching between Wi-Fi networks.

There is also a practical difference between a compact tablet with cellular connectivity and a smartphone. The larger screen can provide more room for documents, web pages, maps, messaging and media while remaining considerably smaller than a traditional full-size tablet.

However, 5G alone would not determine whether the MatePad Mini 2 is a meaningful upgrade. Battery capacity, modem efficiency, display power consumption and Huawei’s software optimization will all influence how useful cellular connectivity is in everyday use.

That is why the rumored 5G feature should be viewed as part of a larger upgrade rather than as a standalone reason to buy the new tablet.

Huawei MatePad Mini 2: What to Expect

Based on the current leak, the Huawei MatePad Mini 2 could arrive before the end of 2026 and may introduce 5G connectivity as one of its most important upgrades. For users comparing Huawei’s compact tablet with newer Android models, our tablet buying guide covers the specifications that matter most before choosing a device.

The reported 8GB/12GB RAM options, up to 512GB of storage and multiple color choices also suggest that Huawei could offer the new compact tablet in several configurations.

For comparison, the current MatePad Mini already features an 8.8-inch 120Hz OLED display, 2560 × 1600 resolution, a high screen-to-body ratio, satellite messaging support and M-Pencil Pro compatibility.

More details about the MatePad Mini 2 should emerge as Huawei moves closer to its official announcement. Until then, the reported specifications and launch timing remain based on leaks and should be treated as preliminary.
