iPhone 18 Pro Series: 10 Biggest Rumored Upgrades Ahead of Apple’s September Launch

With less than two months remaining before Apple’s expected September launch event, rumors surrounding the iPhone 18 Pro lineup continue to paint a picture of an evolutionary—but meaningful—upgrade. Rather than introducing a dramatic redesign, Apple is expected to focus on improving performance, battery life, imaging, connectivity, and AI capabilities.

Based on the latest supply chain reports and industry leaks, here are the 10 most significant rumored upgrades for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

    1. Refined Design with a Smaller Dynamic Island

The iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to retain Apple’s familiar premium design language, with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display options for the Pro and Pro Max, respectively.

One notable visual refinement could be a smaller Dynamic Island, made possible by moving additional Face ID components beneath the display. While the overall appearance may remain largely unchanged, the reduced cutout would provide a higher screen-to-body ratio and a more immersive viewing experience.

    2. Upgraded LTPO+ Display Technology

Apple is reportedly preparing an enhanced LTPO+ OLED display for the new Pro models.

Like previous LTPO panels, the upgraded technology will support adaptive refresh rates ranging from very low frequencies to 120Hz. However, the next-generation panel is expected to further improve power efficiency, allowing smoother high-refresh-rate performance while reducing battery consumption.

    3. Larger Battery for the iPhone 18 Pro Max

Battery life is expected to receive one of the most noticeable upgrades this year.

Leaks suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature a battery nearly 10% larger than its predecessor, resulting in a slight increase in device thickness.

Recently surfaced images, reportedly showing the Pro Max battery, indicate a 5,187mAh cell manufactured by Sunwoda Electronic Co., Ltd. The battery reportedly carries model number A3166 and a rated voltage of 3.903V.

If accurate, this would represent the largest battery ever used in an iPhone.

    4. A20 Pro Chip Built on TSMC’s First-Generation 2nm Process

Performance remains a major focus for Apple’s flagship smartphones.

The iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to debut the new A20 Pro processor, reportedly manufactured using TSMC’s first-generation 2nm process.

Compared with current 3nm chips, the new process is expected to deliver:

    • Higher transistor density
    • Faster CPU and GPU performance
    • Improved energy efficiency
    • Better sustained performance through advanced packaging technology

These improvements could benefit demanding workloads such as gaming, video editing, and on-device AI processing.

    5. Third-Generation Apple C2 5G Modem

Apple is also rumored to continue expanding its in-house silicon strategy with the third-generation C2 modem.

The new modem is expected to improve:

    • 5G download and upload speeds
    • Signal reliability
    • Power efficiency
    • Network stability in challenging environments

The continued development of Apple’s custom modem technology represents another step toward reducing reliance on third-party suppliers.

    6. Expanded Satellite Connectivity

One of the most exciting rumors involves satellite communications.

Previous iPhone models limited satellite connectivity primarily to Emergency SOS and basic messaging.

The iPhone 18 Pro could reportedly expand these capabilities by allowing limited internet access—including basic web browsing—in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

If implemented, the feature would significantly improve usability for:

    • Outdoor adventures
    • Maritime activities
    • Remote work locations
    • Emergency situations

Apple has not confirmed these capabilities, and the final feature set may vary by region.

    7. New N2 Wireless Chip with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6

Wireless connectivity is also expected to receive a substantial upgrade.

Apple is rumored to introduce a new N2 wireless chip supporting:

    • Wi-Fi 7
    • Bluetooth 6

Although detailed specifications remain unknown, the new chip is expected to improve ecosystem features such as:

    • AirDrop transfers
    • Personal Hotspot performance
    • Multi-device connectivity
    • Overall connection stability

These improvements would further strengthen integration across Apple’s expanding hardware ecosystem.

    8. Variable Aperture Camera System

Photography remains one of the iPhone’s strongest selling points, and Apple is reportedly preparing a notable enhancement for the main camera.

The 48MP primary sensor is expected to gain variable aperture technology, allowing the lens to mechanically adjust the amount of incoming light.

    Potential advantages include:

    • Better exposure control in bright environments
    • Improved low-light performance
    • Greater creative control over depth of field
    • More natural background blur

Variable aperture systems have appeared on several Android flagships, and their arrival on the iPhone would represent a significant step forward for Apple’s camera hardware.

    9. Redesigned Camera Control Button

Apple may also revise its dedicated Camera Control button.

According to current reports, the company plans to simplify the design by removing touch-sensitive swipe gestures and haptic feedback, leaving only pressure-sensitive input.

This change could reduce accidental activations while offering a more consistent experience for users who frequently use the physical shutter button for photography.

    10. New Matte Glass Finish and Fresh Color Options

The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is also expected to receive subtle aesthetic improvements.

Leaks suggest Apple will introduce a redesigned matte glass rear panel with a more seamless transition around the MagSafe charging area, replacing the more noticeable two-tone appearance found on previous models.

As usual, Apple is also expected to unveil a new signature Pro-exclusive color.

Current rumors point to Dark Cherry as the headline finish, alongside Light Blue, Dark Gray, and Silver options.

Apple Intelligence May Expand to More Markets

Beyond hardware, Apple’s AI ambitions continue to gain momentum.

Earlier this month, Apple Technology Development (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. reportedly received regulatory approval related to on-device generative AI services in China.

While Apple has not announced a launch timeline, the approval suggests that Apple Intelligence could become available to users in additional markets, including China, pending regulatory and commercial rollout.

If introduced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series, broader Apple Intelligence availability could become one of the lineup’s most significant software enhancements.

    Outlook

Although the iPhone 18 Pro series is unlikely to feature a dramatic redesign, the rumored upgrades indicate that Apple is focusing on refining the user experience where it matters most. Improvements in battery capacity, display efficiency, camera versatility, wireless connectivity, custom silicon, and AI capabilities could make the 2026 Pro lineup one of Apple’s most balanced flagship releases in recent years.

As always, these details are based on industry leaks and supply chain reports. Apple has not officially confirmed the specifications or features of the iPhone 18 Pro series, and the final hardware may differ when the devices are unveiled later this year.
