Philip Morris Japan (PMJ) has announced that it will open the IQOS Flagship Ginza on September 4, 2026, marking the debut of the world’s first global flagship experience space for the IQOS brand under Philip Morris International (PMI).
Located in Tokyo’s prestigious Ginza district, the new venue represents a significant milestone in PMI’s evolving retail strategy, shifting beyond traditional product sales to create an immersive brand destination for adult consumers.
A New Concept for the IQOS Brand
According to PMJ, the IQOS Flagship Ginza is designed specifically for adult smokers aged 20 and above, in line with Japan’s legal smoking age.
Rather than functioning solely as a retail outlet, the flagship will combine:
- Product demonstrations and hands-on experiences
- Brand exhibitions
- Community engagement activities
- Customer services
- Lifestyle-oriented spaces
PMJ says the goal is to strengthen connections between adult consumers and the IQOS brand through interactive experiences while showcasing the company’s smoke-free product portfolio.
PMI’s First Global IQOS Flagship
The Ginza location will be the first global flagship store established for IQOS anywhere in the world.
PMI describes the flagship concept as a new generation of brand spaces that will be located in prominent cities and designed to reflect local culture through architecture, interior design, services, and customer experiences.
For the Tokyo flagship, the company says the design will draw inspiration from Japan’s natural landscapes, seasonal beauty, and traditional craftsmanship, creating a space that blends contemporary retail with elements of Japanese culture.
Japan Remains a Strategic Market
Japan continues to play a central role in PMI’s global smoke-free strategy.
PMJ entered the Japanese market in 1985 and today employs approximately 1,600 people across the country. The company also says it maintains a significant share of Japan’s tobacco market, where heated tobacco products have achieved widespread consumer adoption.
The country’s early acceptance of heated tobacco technology has made Japan one of IQOS’s most important global markets and a key testing ground for new retail concepts.
Smoke-Free Products Drive PMI’s Growth
PMI continues to accelerate its transition away from conventional cigarettes toward smoke-free alternatives.
According to the company, as of December 31, 2025, more than 43 million adult consumers worldwide were using PMI’s smoke-free products.
The company also reported that smoke-free products accounted for 43% of its net revenue during the first quarter of 2026, underscoring the growing importance of reduced-risk alternatives within its business.
Since 2008, PMI says it has invested approximately US$16 billion in the research, scientific assessment, development, and commercialization of smoke-free technologies.
Its current portfolio includes heated tobacco systems such as IQOS as well as other smoke-free nicotine products.
The company also notes that certain IQOS products have received authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), including Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) orders for specific products, subject to the FDA’s authorized claims and conditions.
From Retail Stores to Brand Experience Centers
The launch of IQOS Flagship Ginza reflects a broader trend in consumer retail, where flagship stores increasingly serve as destinations for brand storytelling and customer engagement rather than simply points of sale.
Compared with traditional retail locations, flagship experience spaces can provide:
- Interactive product demonstrations
- Educational sessions for adult consumers
- Brand heritage and innovation showcases
- Community events
- New product launches and exclusive experiences
For PMI, this strategy is intended to strengthen long-term relationships with adult consumers while reinforcing the premium positioning of the IQOS brand.
Existing IQOS Ginza Store to Close
As part of the transition, PMJ confirmed that the current IQOS Store Ginza will close on August 30, 2026, just days before the flagship venue officially opens.
The move signals a shift from a conventional retail model to a more experience-driven approach that emphasizes consumer interaction and brand engagement.
Strengthening the Future of Smoke-Free Retail
The opening of IQOS Flagship Ginza highlights how major tobacco companies are adapting their retail strategies as smoke-free products become an increasingly important part of the global nicotine market.
By investing in immersive flagship locations that combine product experiences with cultural design and customer engagement, PMI is positioning IQOS as more than a heated tobacco device—it is building a premium lifestyle brand centered on adult consumers seeking smoke-free alternatives.
As the first global flagship for IQOS, the Ginza location could serve as a blueprint for future experience centers in other major cities, reflecting PMI’s continued commitment to expanding its smoke-free ecosystem worldwide.
