Igeekphone News on December 24th: It is reported that the outer screen size of Apple’s first foldable iPhone Fold is only 5.3 inches, which is even smaller than the already discontinued iPhone mini, whose screen is 5.4 inches. This report has left many people puzzled as to why Apple chose such a compact body design.
Some analyses point out that if the outer screen is designed to be more slender and close to the shape of traditional mobile phones, the inner screen will be more square when unfolded. This proportion is rather awkward for usage scenarios such as video playback and split-screen multitasking.

Conversely, if the inner screen adopts a rectangular ratio that is more suitable for split-screen operation, it will inevitably lead to the outer screen becoming wider or smaller in size, and the user experience of the outer screen will also deviate from users’ cognitive habits of traditional mobile phones.
Returning to the iPhone Fold, it is reported that the internal screen ratio of this device is close to 4:3. This design indicates that Apple is more inclined towards the second product concept mentioned above. The 4:3 internal screen ratio enables Apple to more easily transplant the mature multitasking functions of the iPadOS system to the foldable screen.

In this way, the inner screen becomes the core screen for users. Apple prioritizes ensuring this ipad-style large-screen experience rather than pursuing the slender screen form of traditional smartphones.
If it is in a folding form, the iPhone Fold feels more like a small-screen phone used in daily life. After all, the 5.3-inch outer screen is smaller than almost all mainstream foldable screens on the market. This also indicates that Apple intends to abandon the design concept of “using the outer screen as the main screen” and recommend users to use the inner screen.
It is worth noting that this screen form is called “wide folding” in the industry. Besides Apple, Android will also launch wide folding models in the future. Let’s wait and see.
