The YI 4K+ uses the latest generation of Ambarella processing chip, making it capable of 4K/60p video capture. It can also shoot impressively smooth 4K/30p footage using electronic stabilization. Other standout features include a 2.2″ Gorilla Glass touch display, the best user interface of any action camera on the market and USB-C connectivity.

Design

The design of this new sports camera would maintain the current style , with a spectacular rear touch screen of 2.19 ” , WiFi and Bluetooth connections. We only see a change in the front of the camera , with a “pavement” and the YK + logo highlighting on it. Yi 4K+ camera comes with Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS). The camera offers USB Type-C support and can shoot in RAW format. It also features live streaming and VR support. The Yi 4K+ Action Camera measures 65 x 30 x 42mm in dimensions and weighs around 96.3 gram in weight. It sports seven layers glass lens with f/2.8 aperture and 155-degree field-of-view. The 2.91-inch touchscreen display offers a screen resolution of 640×360p at 330ppi. The Yi 4K+ action camera makes use of Sony IMX377 12-megapixel CMOS image sensor with Exmor R. Hardware

The new Yi 4K+ camera offers twice the frame rate when compared to its predecessor Yi 4K. It employs Ambarella H2 SoC processor with 2GB of RAM which offers a maximum bit rate of 120Mbps. The processor is also said to be the first 14nm video processing SoC. It consumes low power while delivering 4K Ultra HD videos. The Yi 4K + is not only the world’s first action cam with 60 frames per second at a 4K resolution, it is also the first Action Cam with the new Ambarella H2 image processor , which allows this. In the 14nm process the processor is about twice as fast as the Ambarella A9SE chip of the predecessor. High-resolution 4K videos are recorded with a bit rate of up to 100 Mbps. The only downside: Yi Technology continues to video compression on H.264 and not on the latest standard H.265! The 12 Megapixel Sony IMX377 image sensor remains faithful to the manufacturer.

Furthermore, it is now also possible to activate electronic image stabilization in 4K video recordings. However, the EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) is restricted to 4K at 30 frames per second. A lot has also been done with the user interface. For ease of use, the camera “handsfree” can be controlled with voice commands. This makes it possible to start and stop recordings, to shoot pictures on command and to change the individual shooting modes by voice commands. Another new feature is the possibility to make RAW image recordings. There are no limits to the subsequent image processing! There is also a small but interesting change in the connection possibilities. The Yi 4K+ action camera also allows slow motion recordings of 720p resolution with 60\120\240 fps at rates of 2\4\8. The camera comes with 2.4G/5G Dual band support and comes with 5 GHz Wi-Fi and built-in Bluetooth 4.0. The action camera is not waterproof but can resist up to 40 meters under water.

Conclusion

Yi 4K+ Action Camera is an impressive upgrade and once again offers a budget-friendly alternative to GoPro’s options. The ability to shoot 4K at 60fps is genuinely impressive and isn’t something anyone else is currently offering. Other useful additions like voice controls and a USB-C port are clearly inspired by what GoPro has done, but as they say ‘imitation is the best form of flattery’.
