Tips And Tricks To Ease Your Software Development And Help Out With Issues

Reducing time to market is the goal of every software development organization. However, the only way a company can achieve this goal is by streamlining the entire development process. And how exactly do you do that?

In this review, we will share several tips on how to enhance your software development process – right from the inception of an idea until the product is deployed in the market. Let’s get started.

    1. Set Clear Goals

Never start a software development process until you have well-defined goals. The goal helps your development team know what exactly it is they are working towards. It also makes it easier to assign specific duties to the different members of your team. Aside from the ultimate goal, it’s good to have smaller objectives in between. These are very helpful in monitoring the progress of your plan.

The small milestones will keep you and your development team motivated. You’ll also find them very useful when demonstrating the progress of your work to senior stakeholders of the product.

    2. Have A Defined Workflow

It may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised at the number of teams that operate without a functional workflow. Establishing a workflow before the development process starts will benefit you in many ways. For one, it boosts efficiency. Everyone on your team will know what exactly their duties are. This effectively eliminates distractions and miscommunication issues. A proper workflow will also boost collaboration between team members. This contributes to enhanced efficiency and increases the overall quality of your software product. You may read more resources here.

That said, it’s highly unlikely that you will get the workflow right from the first try. There will be some loopholes that you won’t know about until the development process starts. Therefore, don’t put your workflow in place and forget about it. Be sure to evaluate its effectiveness. This is especially crucial once the development process goes beyond the initial stages.

As the tasks increase, chances are you’ll realize that certain people are more overwhelmed than others. To prevent such issues from slowing down the entire process, evaluate and adjust the workflow as needed.

    3. Set Up Quality Control Measures From The Beginning

Don’t wait until a huge chunk of code is completed before you start putting quality assurance measures in place. That’s a terrible strategy. Quality control is supposed to be an ongoing process in software development. Therefore, make sure the testing protocols are in place from the beginning. Talk to your developers and reiterate the importance of quality. Provide all the resources required to scale your software development capabilities and ensure your team has the skills to utilize the resources. If there are any gaps, consider partnering with a development company to offer training or assistance where necessary. Then set up the testing team and create a productive communication channel between them and the developers.

    4. Utilize Automation Testing

Automation testing is every QA teams’ best friend. If you are not aware, automation testing is the use of software tools to test code for security, performance, and functionality. This testing technique comes with lots of benefits which explains why so many organizations are adopting it. In fact, it’s estimated that the automation testing market value will hit $35 billion by 2026.

And what are the benefits that you can expect from adopting automation testing?

    • Increased developers productivity
    • Faster time to market due to reduced testing time
    • Reduced testing expenses
    • Reduced human error issues

The benefits of automation testing are very clear, but it’s worth pointing out that your organization should not aim for 100% automation. This is impractical and ill-advised.

Why is that? Because certain factors of software testing are better done manually. For instance, the appearance and feel of a user interface is not something you want to let a piece of code judge for you. Only a manual human tester can tell if a GUI looks good.

Moreover, it doesn’t make financial sense to automate certain tests. For example, automating a test that is not done frequently will yield very low ROI, if any.

Therefore, you need to look at your needs and talk to your testers before deciding which tests to automate. You must also do some research on the various automation testing tools available and pick something that’s fitting for your organization.

    5. Maintain An Open Line Of Communication

The importance of efficient communication in software development can never be overstated. Isolate any member of the software development team, and you’re looking at a disaster that would, at best, delay your product and, at worst, affect the end-users and, by extension, the reputation of your organization.

Therefore, set up an open line of communication for everyone involved in the development process. Your developers should know what the investors expect from the product. The developers should know and understand the objectives and timeframes. They must also understand what KPIs will be used.

Feedback between the players should flow with ease. The project manager must know how to update the stakeholders on the product’s progress. Even more important, they should be able to pass down feedback and crucial updates to the developers as swiftly as possible.

    6. Keep An Eye On Your Work In Progress

You should do everything possible to avoid having a long list of work in progress on your board. Overloading your developers reduces their focus and increases the risk of errors. This basically means that the tasks may get done but at the expense of quality.

Therefore, try and limit the amount of work assigned to the team. Some organizations have a  maximum number of tasks that each developer can work on at any given time. This is a nice approach that you can adopt for your team as well.

    7. Support Your Team

Your developers and testers need support to thrive. Give them a productive working environment, have them trained where necessary, and supply the required resources. Your organization should also empower the team to be innovative. Do not micromanage everything. Neither should you set strict regulations that limit research and development. Let your team stretch their creativity where possible, and they might just improve your product in a way you didn’t think possible.

Hopefully, this guide has given you all the insights you needed to enhance your software development process. Good luck!
