Your Electronic Devices Are Not Built to Last: Here’s Why

The iPhone 12 launched and released late last year starts at $699 for the smallest and most basic models. The premium model, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, with the largest internal memory (512 GB), will set you back $1,399. It is expensive but, nowadays, it is expected. No, it is not just you. The cost of owning a smartphone has definitely soared over the years. Although budget phones exist, you have to spend more if you want the latest and best features.

    New Features, More Expensive, Unrepairable

The first iPhone launched more than a decade ago was priced similar to the iPhone SE. It was only $499 in the United States, a very high price at the time, but now it is in the budget range.

The iPhone has improved over the years. The iPhone 12 Pro has not just one but three back cameras to take ultra wide, wide, and telephoto images. It also comes equipped with a LiDAR Scanner to improve the photos you take at night and low-light areas.

Moreover, the iPhone 12 is powered by what Apple claims to be the fastest chip in a smartphone, the A14 Bionic Chip. It makes watching a movie, listening to music, playing a mobile game, and switching from app to app as seamless as possible.

The technology company also boasts that the newest iPhone is tougher than its predecessors and competitors because it uses a Ceramic Shield that makes it resistant to drops. In case it slips out of your hand or pocket, the screen is less likely to shatter.

However, despite the upgrades and the premium price tag, no iPhone 12 user expects their handset to last forever. Apple products are notoriously expensive to repair. Moreover, you cannot bring it to a third-party service to get a better deal because the company makes it difficult to tear apart and replace individual components.

So, once your expensive iPhone is damaged, you have no choice but to pay a fortune for repair or buy a new unit.

    No Longer Built to Last

Electronic devices have a limited lifespan, and, nowadays, the amount of time a consumer spends using their gadgets feels shorter and shorter.

One study published in 2015 found that, between 2004 and 2012, the number of new household appliances sold to replace a defective unit increased from 3.5 percent to 8.3 percent. It was a stark difference in under a decade. It does not prove that modern-day electronics have built-in obsolescence to increase sales. However, it provides evidence that there is an obsolescence problem.

Experts argue that devices are not built to last, not just because of corporate greed. There are actually limitations because of the materials used to create the chips, sensors, capacitors, etc. They are also subject to wear and tear. They do not work forever and, therefore, your iPhones and your Samsung Galaxies will not be eternal, either.

    Make Your Devices Live Longer

There are, however, ways to make electronic devices last longer.

Generally, devices that can be taken apart can have a better lifespan. If you can take the malfunctioning component and replace it with a new one, you still will be able to use the device for years to come.

Desktop users should choose to custom-build their own PC for gaming or work. It will allow them to not only design their own device with the features they want, but each component is also independent of one another and can, therefore, be upgraded.

Smartphone users do not have such luxury. Fairphone sells smartphones designed to have removable parts that can be removed and replaced. However, the brand is not widely available around the world. Smartphones that still have removable batteries are a dying breed. If you want to buy the high-tech flagship phones, you are stuck with a battery that you will not replace.

But, to make your gadgets last longer, the key is to take better care of them. Read the user manual provided with every purchase and follow the guidelines the manufacturer has set.

Avoid dropping it, getting it wet, getting it dirty, or exposing it to extreme heat and cold. Treating your electronic devices better will ensure that you get to use them for a long time and get your money’s worth.

Electronic devices are expensive, and they cost more and more every year. While your gadgets will not last forever, there are a few options that will allow you to use the technology for longer. There are also ways to lengthen the lifespan of any device.

meta desc: Smartphones are getting more expensive, but they are not built to last. After a few years, these devices are expected to break and be replaced with a new model.
