Anbernic has launched its latest console, the Anbernic RG552 Console, which, unlike some of its latest offerings, is not an old machine with a new design, but something a little more powerful.

Design
For those who are not, know that it is basically a good big rectangle of metal, which exudes good solidity. The borders around the screen are reminiscent of the Nintendo Switch Lite, as is its very flat format, the grip of which is only helped by two small rubber pads on the back. At the front, we find the classic buttons: Start, Select, B / A / Y / X in the manner of Nintendo, a directional pad and two clickable joysticks to provide R3 / L3. On the left side we have the volume buttons.
On the right, the standby button. At the top, you will find the L1/L2/R1/R2 triggers placed in pairs on both sides. A mini HDMI port allows you to extend your display on a screen, a jack port to connect your wired headphones. And finally, you have two USB-C ports which serve two different purposes: one is for transferring files, whether internal memory or microSD card, while the other is dedicated to load.
Controls
The least we can say when taking the Anbernic RG552 in hand is that we immediately feel that it was made with 8 and 16 bit consoles in mind. The most natural position to take it in hand is simply the same as when you take a Super Nintendo controller in hand: the left thumb on the cross, the right thumb on the B/A/Y/X buttons, the index on R1 and L1. Taken this way, the console is very comfortable.
Screen
The Anbernic RG552 is equipped with a 5.36-inch IPS touch screen in Full HD definition and 5:3 format. Well made, the panel goes down low enough in brightness not to burst your eyes at night, and high enough to remain readable in direct sunlight. We are far from the quality of the screens of modern high-end smartphones, of course, but this is not the aim of the product.
Hardware
Well, considering that it has a RockChip RK3399 6-core 1.8Ghz chip and a Mali T860 GPU along with 4GB of RAM, you can expect decent performance in many games, but it’s not performance that is good or consistent enough to be praised. In this sense, playing 8-bit and 16-bit titles is a joke for the Anbernic RG552, but as we make generational advances, things are no longer perfect.
OS
There are two operating systems on the RG552. Android 7.1 is built into the internal storage and boots without the Micro-SD card. The Linux operating system can be booted with the 16GB Micro-SD card in the first SD card slot.
Battery
A 3200 mAh battery has been installed for the power supply, with which the console should have a runtime of up to 6 hours, according to the manufacturer. In the test, however, the time was more like 3-4 hours, depending on what I actually did with the device.
