Huawei Reportedly Preparing Compact MateBook Fold for Q4 Launch with External Display and Foldable Flagship Design

Huawei is reportedly expanding its foldable PC lineup with a new compact MateBook Fold, expected to debut in the fourth quarter of 2026. According to information shared by Chinese tech tipster ZhiJiao Digital, the upcoming device will introduce a smaller form factor while retaining Huawei’s premium foldable notebook experience and adding a new external display for enhanced convenience.

The report comes as Huawei prepares to unveil an updated version of its existing MateBook Fold later today, which is expected to retain its signature 18-inch foldable display and overall design.

Compact Foldable Design with External Display

Unlike the current large-screen MateBook Fold, the new model is said to focus on portability without sacrificing productivity.

One of its biggest upgrades is the addition of an external display, allowing users to perform everyday tasks without unfolding the main screen. The cover display is expected to support functions such as:

    • Viewing and replying to WeChat notifications
    • Previewing calendar events and schedules
    • Creating quick notes
    • Scanning QR codes
    • Screen projection and casting
    • Accessing other lightweight productivity tools

This design aims to make the device more practical for quick interactions while commuting or during short work sessions, reducing the need to fully unfold the laptop for simple tasks.

    Three Devices in One

According to the leak, Huawei’s new foldable computer will support three primary usage modes:

    • External-screen tablet mode for quick access and portable use
    • Traditional laptop mode for everyday productivity
    • Large-screen unfolded mode for multitasking, creative work, and entertainment

The flexible design is intended to provide users with a seamless transition between tablet and notebook experiences, adapting to different work scenarios throughout the day.

    Approximately 14 Inches When Unfolded

Although Huawei has not officially confirmed the display size, the leaked information suggests the compact MateBook Fold will feature an unfolded display measuring around 14 inches.

When folded, the usable display area would be approximately 10 inches, placing it in the same size category as many premium tablets currently on the market.

This form factor could strike a balance between portability and workspace, making it suitable for professionals, students, and frequent travelers.

    Expanding Huawei’s Foldable Ecosystem

The rumored device also aligns with Huawei’s broader strategy of expanding its foldable product portfolio.

Combined with Huawei’s foldable smartphones—including its distinctive tri-fold handset—the compact MateBook Fold would further strengthen the company’s ecosystem by offering foldable devices across multiple product categories.

The ability to switch seamlessly between smartphones, tablets, and laptops is expected to remain a key focus of Huawei’s connected device strategy.

    Flagship Hardware Expected

Despite its smaller size, the new MateBook Fold is expected to deliver flagship-level specifications similar to its larger sibling.

According to the report, anticipated hardware includes:

    • Huawei’s Xuanwu waterdrop hinge design
    • UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) display protection
    • A self-developed Kirin X9 series processor
    • HarmonyOS 6.1 pre-installed
    • Support for Huawei M-Pencil stylus input

The combination of Huawei’s proprietary hinge technology and UTG display is expected to improve durability while maintaining a slim and lightweight design.

    HarmonyOS Productivity Features

The compact MateBook Fold is also expected to inherit Huawei’s growing software ecosystem powered by HarmonyOS 6.1.

    Expected productivity features include:

    • Multi-screen collaboration across Huawei devices
    • Cross-device file sharing
    • Tablet drawing and creative workflows
    • Smart office capabilities
    • Enhanced ecosystem integration

Support for the Huawei M-Pencil would further position the device as a versatile tool for note-taking, illustration, document annotation, and creative professionals.

    Launch Timeline

Huawei has not officially announced the compact MateBook Fold, and the reported specifications remain based on industry leaks.

However, if the information proves accurate, the company is expected to introduce the new foldable flagship during the fourth quarter of 2026, expanding its premium notebook lineup with a more portable alternative to the existing 18-inch MateBook Fold.

With its rumored external display, three-in-one convertible design, 14-inch foldable screen, Kirin X9 processor, and HarmonyOS 6.1, the compact MateBook Fold could become one of Huawei’s most innovative productivity devices, offering a compelling option for users seeking the flexibility of both a tablet and a laptop in a single foldable form factor.
