Has HyperMotion Caused EA FC 27 Animations and Player Models to Suffer?

IGGM.com Breaks Down the Animation Controversy & Gameplay Verdict

With the closed beta now concluded, whether you participated firsthand or watched reviews, you likely have an initial impression of the experience offered by FIFA 27.

Admittedly, it is not a perfect game; however, it addresses many issues found in previous installments and introduces new features, most notably The Grounds.

Yet, some critics argue that the fluidity of animations and player models in FUT 27 falls short of titles released three or four years ago.

In this article, IGGM.com examines the validity of this claim and evaluates whether FUT 27 is worth unlocking based on these aspects.

    HyperMotion Technology: A turning point

Introduced in FIFA 23, HyperMotion technology captures real-world player movements during matches and converts that data into realistic in-game animations.

This shift marked a change in focus for the series: the priority moved from mere fluidity and natural movement to the pursuit of authentic, high-fidelity replication.

While this represented a milestone in technological innovation, it also resulted in player models and movements that often appear highly unnatural, leading some players to feel that the games following FIFA 23 have lost the true essence of a football simulation.

From FC 23 to the upcoming FC 27, the development team has not only retained HyperMotion but has continuously upgraded it; ironically, this stacking of technology has, in some respects, led to a decline in the overall experience.

    Why is HyperMotion problematic?

Although FIFA 27 utilizes the latest iteration of HyperMotion, human movement is inherently complex. Consequently, even with the most faithful recreation of real-world matches, player animations in the game can sometimes appear uncanny or bizarre.

Take FUT 27 closed beta as an example. A close look at player animations reveals a disconnect between the upper and lower body: legs might be churning rapidly while the spine remains rigidly upright, creating a highly unnatural look.

In contrast, earlier FIFA titles, which lacked HyperMotion, handled these movements much more naturally.

Foot placement was smoother, and overall body coordination felt superior; players would straighten up when making contact with the ball and lean forward while chasing it before returning to an upright posture.

HyperMotion is indeed an interesting and reliable technology, and the quality of the captured animations is quite high. The issue, however, lies in how EA implements it.

In the pursuit of realism, the development team has not only excessively sped up animation responsiveness but also blended various dribbling moves at unnatural speeds, moves that, in reality, are either never used or physically impossible to execute.

If only the visuals were affected, it might be manageable; the real problem is that misleading visuals can cause you to misjudge a player’s next move, thereby hindering your progress, especially when trying to accumulate resources early on in FUT 27.

Of course, even without these issues, building a powerful squad to advance through the game during the initial grind phase requires significant investment. Having enough coins early on can give you more flexibility when upgrading your squad, especially when the transfer market becomes an important part of your progression.

So if you’ve already pre-ordered the game, why not also buy FC coins at IGGM.com to make sure you have enough coins to build your dream championship team on day one?

The development team is out of touch with reality

If you’ve been playing EA FC series over the past few years, you’ll realize that HyperMotion technology is just the tip of the iceberg regarding the development team’s quest for ultimate realism.

Whether in the competitive Ultimate Team mode or the more casual Career mode, most changes introduced by the developers focus on enhancing authenticity while often neglecting gameplay.

While replicating real-world football matches is a core feature of FIFA series, it remains a video game at its heart, not a virtual documentary. You likely value rich, rewarding matches more than mere photorealism.

No need to skip FIFA 27: What are the advantages?

Admittedly, when looking solely at player models and animation fluidity, the increasingly advanced HyperMotion technology seems to hold FUT 27 back. Nevertheless, the game benefits from cutting-edge technology in other areas.

In other words, both new and older FC titles have their own pros and cons; comparing the strengths of an older title against the shortcomings of FIFA 27 is perhaps being too harsh on the new release.

For instance, while player movement fluidity may have limitations, FUT 27 breaks away from the old practice of having players of the same height share identical animation sets.

Instead, it incorporates specific stride patterns and movement characteristics for individual players, significantly enhancing the distinctiveness of top-tier stars.

Furthermore, FC 27 graphics engine further leverages the advantages of next-generation hardware.

By utilizing advanced ray tracing and lighting/shadow rendering technologies, it creates more natural transitions between shadows and highlights under various lighting conditions.

As matches progress and weather conditions shift dynamically, details such as pitch conditions, player sweat, and dirt accumulation on kits are rendered in real-time, adding another layer of realism and immersion to the gameplay experience.

Even if these visual improvements don’t appeal to you, perhaps because you prioritize gameplay mechanics above all else, FUT 27 still offers a vastly superior gameplay experience compared to titles from three or four years ago, featuring elements like increased player agility and optimized lateral dribbling mechanics.

As you gradually adapt to the improved agility and lateral dribbling mechanics, winning matches and earning FUT 27 coins through regular gameplay will become a more efficient way to progress in your early game.

    Conclusion

While FIFA 27 certainly has its flaws, and older titles have their own unique strengths, the older games are unlikely to surpass the new one in terms of overall value.

Dismissing the new release solely due to issues with player models or animation fluidity would mean missing out on the bigger picture.

IGGM.com hopes this analysis helps you decide whether to pre-order FUT 27 and enhances your experience with the full game. Thanks for reading!
