How Often Should A Data Backup Be Made?

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonJune 25, 2020

Data is one of the most valuable assets in your company and your life. That’s why it’s essential to make sure that it won’t cease to exist. Effective best free backup software can save you or your company a lot of trouble and money.

Everybody knows the importance of data backup, but its loss is still a significant threat to many companies, and ordinary citizens as well. But how often should a data backup be made? It depends on many factors.

    Importance of A Data Backup

Before we get to the question given in the title, though, let’s see why it is so important to make regular data backups. There are a lot of reasons for data backup. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a business user or the occasional one, it’s still essential to make your data backup.

Firstly, it prevents data loss, like lost billings, customer database, and financial records gone. Many companies suffer from data loss every year, and in 78 percent of cases, the reason is system or hardware failure, viruses, malware, etc. Thanks to data backups, you’ll be able to retrieve your data in case anything wrong happens.

It doesn’t only apply to businesses, of course. Many ordinary computer users suffer from lost files, photos, and more types of data. Regular backups are the first step in preventing any data loss from happening.

Secondly, it saves a lot of trouble and brings peace of mind. By having a data backup, you’ll be ready to deal with any problematic situation like cybercrime or system malfunction.

    How Often?

Now it’s time to answer the most important question. How often should a data backup be made? It depends on two factors: type of user, and type of information. The more critical the data, the more often you should do your backups. The same thing applies to the kind of user you are.

If you’re a person who rarely uses the computer and doesn’t create many new and essential files, a monthly backup should do the trick. Of course, you can do it more often, but in this case, it’s not necessary to backup your data more than twice a month.

Now, let’s say that you’re a regular computer user. You create files every day, and the vast majority of them are important to you. If that’s the case, then you should do your data backup at least once a week.

Should you use your computer heavily on a daily basis, or you use it for business purposes, then a recommendation would be to do your backup every day. By doing it, you’ll prevent any serious troubles from occurring. A daily backup is a great idea, especially for businesses because of the importance of data they have.

    Data Backup Options

Now that you know the importance of data backups and how often you should carry them out, you should find out what options are available. There are many different types of backup, and it’s vital to learn more about them to choose the right choice.

The first type of backup is an external hard drive. The most common examples of external hard drives are USBs and SSDs. Their most significant advantage is that they’re portable, and therefore easy to transport. They’re also easy to use and are capable of storing large files.

The second one is cloud storage. These types allow users to create their backups on hardware in large amounts of storage space that can be accessed remotely. It’s very easy to use, and users can access their data anytime they want via the internet.

The third type is an online backup service. In this method, the service provider manages the stored data, creates a backup, and protects it. This type is often used by the companies who need to be especially careful with the data they possess.

    Recommendations

Backing up your data is very important and should be done regularly. The frequency depends on the type of user you are and what type of data you have stored on your computer. Generally, the more important data you have, the more often you should do your backup. By creating a convenient backup schedule that suits your needs, you’ll be able to prevent data loss and any more troubles from occurring.

It’s also essential to choose the right way of a data backup. There’s a wide range of options available, but the best idea would be to use a few of them at the same time. By splitting your data into smaller pieces and saving them in different places, you’ll increase the data security.

To sum it all up, if you want your files to be safe, you should do your data backup as often as possible, and store it in a few different places.
