How to Turn Off Location Services Permissions for Apps on iPhone

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonSeptember 15, 2026
Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

Your iPhone can use location information for navigation, weather, photo organization, local search, recommendations, and many other features. However, not every app needs to know where you are all the time.

If you want more control over your privacy, iOS lets you decide which apps can access your location and when they can use it. You can completely disable location access for an individual app, allow it only while the app is being used, or prevent it from using your precise location.

The process only takes a few steps, but understanding the different permission choices can help you avoid turning off a feature you still need.

How to Turn Off Location Access for a Specific App

If one particular app does not need your location, you can change its iphone app permission without affecting other apps.

    1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
    2. Tap Privacy & Security.
    3. Select Location Services.
    4. Find the app you want to manage.
    5. Tap the app name.
    6. Select Never.

Once Never is selected, that app will no longer be able to access your iPhone’s location through Location Services.

This is useful for apps that have requested location access even though their main functions do not depend on knowing where you are.

What the Different Location Permission Options Mean

You do not always have to choose between completely allowing and completely blocking location access.

Depending on the app and your iOS version, you may see several permission options.

    Never

This prevents the selected app from accessing your location through Location Services.

Choose this when an app does not need location information to perform its main function.

Ask Next Time Or When I Share

This gives you more control by allowing iOS to ask for permission again when the app requests your location.

It can be useful if you are unsure whether an app genuinely needs location access.

    While Using the App

This allows location access while the app is actively being used.

For many apps, this can provide a reasonable balance between functionality and privacy. For example, a navigation or map application may need your location while you are using it, but you may not want it accessing your location continuously in the background.

    Always

If available, this allows the app to access your location even when you are not actively using it.

This permission can be necessary for certain features, but it also provides the app with significantly broader location access.

If you do not need an app to track your location in the background, consider changing this setting.

How to Stop an App From Using Your Precise Location

Turning off location access entirely is not your only option.

iPhone also allows you to control whether an app can see your precise location.

For example, some apps may only need to know the general area you are in rather than your exact position.

    To change this setting:

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Go to Privacy & Security > Location Services.
    3. Select the app you want to modify.
    4. Find Precise Location.
    5. Turn Precise Location off.

With this option disabled, the app can receive a less precise location instead of your exact position.

This can be useful for services such as weather or local recommendations where an approximate area may be sufficient.

For users who want more control over personal information, reviewing iPhone privacy and security settings can help limit unnecessary access to sensitive data.

Should You Turn Off Location Services Completely?

You can also disable Location Services at the system level.

    Go to:

Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services

    Then turn off Location Services.

However, this is a much broader change than disabling location access for a single app.

Turning off Location Services can affect apps and features that rely on your location, including navigation, location-based recommendations, and other location-dependent functions.

For most people, reviewing individual app permissions is a better approach than switching off the entire system feature.

Check Which Apps Have Location Access

If you have used your iPhone for a long time, you may have granted location permission to dozens of apps without remembering it.

The Location Services menu provides a useful place to review these permissions.

Look through the list and ask yourself:

    • Does this app actually need my location?
    • Does it need location access when I am not using it?
    • Would approximate location be enough?
    • Have I stopped using this app?
    • Is the location-based feature important enough to justify the permission?

You may discover that some apps no longer need access at all.

Removing unnecessary permissions can also make your privacy settings easier to manage.

Don’t Confuse Location Services With Location-Based Features

Disabling an app’s location permission does not necessarily mean that every form of location-related information disappears from your iPhone.

Apple provides several location-related settings and services. Some system features can use location information for functions such as suggestions, time zones, maps, or other personalized experiences.

If your goal is broader location privacy, it is worth reviewing the other options available under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, rather than changing only one app.

Why Some Apps Need Location Access

Not every request for location information is unnecessary.

A navigation app obviously needs your location to provide turn-by-turn directions. A weather app may use your location to provide local forecasts. A ride-hailing service may need your position to match you with a driver.

The important question is not simply whether an app requests location access. It is whether the requested level of access makes sense for what the app does.

For example, an app that only needs your general area may not require precise location. Similarly, an app that works perfectly when open may not need permission to track your location in the background.

A Simple Privacy Setup for Most Apps

If you want a practical starting point, review your apps individually rather than disabling every location feature on your iPhone.

    A reasonable approach is:

Navigation and ride services: Allow location access when needed for their main functions.

Weather and local information: Consider allowing approximate location if precise positioning is unnecessary.

Apps that rarely need location: Choose Never or Ask Next Time.

Apps with unnecessary precise-location access: Turn off Precise Location.

Apps requesting background access: Check whether the feature genuinely requires it.

This gives you more control without breaking useful location-based features across the device.

How to Change the Setting Later

    Location permissions are not permanent.

If you disable an app’s location access and later discover that you need the feature, simply return to:

Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > [App Name]

You can then select a different permission level.

This means you do not have to make a permanent decision when an app first asks for your location.

    Final Thoughts

iPhone gives you several ways to control how apps use your location. You can block an individual app completely, limit access to the time when the app is being used, disable precise location, or review Location Services across the entire device.

For better privacy without sacrificing useful features, the most practical approach is usually to review location permissions app by app.

If an app does not genuinely need your location, there is little reason to give it access. And when an app does need location information, choosing the least-permissive setting that still supports its function gives you more control over your personal data.
