JD.com has introduced a new AI-powered smart helmet for its food delivery business, marking the latest step in the company’s efforts to improve rider safety, operational efficiency, and service quality through wearable technology.
The company announced that the first batch of AI smart helmets will be provided free of charge to all full-time JD Food Delivery riders, with availability expected to expand gradually to the platform’s broader delivery workforce.
The helmet integrates several intelligent features, including an AI voice assistant, turn-by-turn navigation, one-touch SOS emergency assistance, and merchant environment verification, allowing riders to perform key tasks without relying on handheld smartphones during deliveries.
Hands-Free Order Management
One of the helmet’s headline features is its built-in AI voice assistant, designed to reduce distractions while riders are on the road.
Using voice commands, delivery personnel can complete a range of common tasks, including:
- Accepting new delivery orders
- Confirming arrival at restaurants
- Contacting customers
- Managing delivery workflow
By minimizing the need to interact with smartphones while riding, JD.com aims to improve road safety, particularly in heavy traffic, poor weather, or other challenging delivery conditions.

Smarter Navigation for Faster Deliveries
The smart helmet also introduces a navigation feature called “Single Rider Guidance,” which has been developed using delivery route data collected from experienced JD riders.
Rather than relying solely on conventional mapping software, the system is optimized for real-world delivery scenarios, helping riders navigate complex residential communities, office buildings, and commercial districts more efficiently.
According to JD.com, the feature can reduce route-finding time by approximately three minutes per delivery on average, potentially improving both delivery speed and rider productivity.
AI-Assisted Merchant Verification
Another notable capability is the helmet’s merchant environment verification system.
When riders arrive at a restaurant or pickup location, the AI can assist in assessing the surrounding environment. If it detects unusual conditions or operational issues, the system can automatically report relevant information back to JD’s platform for further review.
Although the company has not disclosed the specific technologies used, the feature appears intended to enhance quality control and improve communication between merchants and the delivery platform.
Intelligent Customer Reminders
The helmet also helps riders comply with customer delivery preferences.
Before arriving at the destination, the AI analyzes special delivery instructions included in the order—such as “Leave the food at the door” or “Please don’t ring the doorbell”—and provides timely voice reminders to the rider.
This proactive approach aims to reduce delivery errors while improving the overall customer experience.
Built-In Safety Features
In addition to operational tools, the AI smart helmet incorporates several safety-focused functions, including a one-touch SOS emergency feature, allowing riders to quickly request assistance if they encounter an emergency while working.
The combination of voice interaction and emergency support reflects the growing role of wearable technology in improving both workplace safety and operational efficiency for delivery personnel.

Part of JD.com’s Broader Rider Support Strategy
JD.com says the AI smart helmet is the latest addition to a broader initiative focused on improving working conditions for delivery riders.
The company highlighted several measures it has implemented since launching its food delivery business, including:
- Providing comprehensive social insurance and housing fund contributions for approximately 150,000 full-time delivery riders
- Signing formal employment contracts with full-time riders
- Offering enhanced workplace benefits and career development opportunities
- Designing customized delivery uniforms and smart insulated delivery boxes
- Investing in intelligent delivery equipment such as the new AI helmet
According to JD.com, these initiatives are intended to improve both rider welfare and service quality while supporting the long-term development of its delivery network.
AI Continues to Transform Last-Mile Delivery
The launch of the AI smart helmet reflects a broader trend across the logistics and food delivery industries, where artificial intelligence and wearable devices are increasingly being used to optimize operations, enhance safety, and improve customer satisfaction.
As competition intensifies in the on-demand delivery market, technologies that enable hands-free interaction, smarter navigation, and real-time decision-making are expected to play an increasingly important role in the future of last-mile logistics.
With its latest AI-powered wearable, JD.com is positioning itself at the forefront of this transformation, combining intelligent software with practical hardware to support the millions of deliveries completed on its platform each day.
