TechInsights, a professional chip research organization, recently disassembled this commercial 5G integrated SoC chip to get more information about the chip.
After the measurement, it was found that the area of the Kirin 990 5G chip was 113.31 square millimeters. It is worth noting that a total of 10.3 billion transistors were plugged in such a small area.
At the same time, the foreign media also used the Kirin 980 chip for comparison: the area of the Kirin 980 chip is 75.57 square millimeters, which is nearly half that of the Kirin 990 5G chip. However, the Kirin 980 chip is a 4G chip, and the Mate 20 X 5G adopts the 4G chip external Baron 5000 5G baseband solution.
The latter area is 85.83 square millimeters, that is, Kirin 980+ Barron 5000=161.4 square millimeters. In other words, the Kirin 990 5G chip is 30% smaller than the Kirin 980 external 5G baseband solution.
