Igeekphone News, May 16th: The Elec, a South Korean media outlet, published a blog post today (May 16th), reporting that Samsung is accelerating the thinning design of foldable screen devices and plans to adopt titanium screen support plates in the Galaxy Z Fold7 and its first triple foldable phone.
In the Galaxy Z Fold SE (Special Edition/ultra-thin folding model) released by Samsung in 2024, titanium metal material was introduced for the first time. The screen support plate is located between the folding screen and the hinge, serving a supporting function. The area close to the hinge is etched to assist in the folding action.
In addition to switching to titanium metal materials, Samsung is also considering removing the digitizer component. Samsung Display, as the main OLED supplier of Samsung, is developing stylus recognition technology that does not require digitizer.
Igeekphone quoted a blog post as saying that digitizer was introduced since the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in 2021 to support the stylus function. The Galaxy Z Fold6 has Digitizers with a thickness of 0.3mm built into both sides. If this component is removed, the thickness of the device can be reduced by 0.6mm.
As the Galaxy Z Fold SE is not equipped with digitizer, its thickness in the folded state is only 10.6mm, which is 1.5mm thinner than the Z Fold6 (12.1mm).
