Recent information indicates that the Xiaomi Mi 7 may be the first Android device with 3D facial recognition technology, this device will only be seen in the third quarter of 2018. There is however a problem with 3D sensor suppliers that is preventing Android manufacturers from including a 3D face mapping system on their phones, similar to the process used by TrueDepth Camera on the Apple iPhone X. With 3D mapping, Apple iPhone X users can grow a beard, wear a hat or sunglasses, grow hair and the phone will still recognize them.
The report says that 3D detection module vendors are having trouble matching the software and hardware they need to make the technology work. The most experienced module is made by a joint venture managed by Qualcomm, Himax Technologies and Truly Optoelectronics. This system works only with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 mobile platform, which is the current top SoC chip maker.
Like Samsung and Huawei prefer to use their own Exynos and Kirin chipsets in their high-end models these companies probably will not be among the first Android phone manufacturers to offer an Android device equipped with 3D sensors. Samsung may not offer such a feature until 2019, according to this information.
It was believed that the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 7, slated to be equipped with the Snapdragon 845 mobile platform, would be launched in the first half of the year with 3D sensors. But today’s report suggests that the phone was delayed for the 3rd quarter because of the challenges with the facial recognition system. The Mi 7 could still be the first Android device to come with 3D facial recognition.
Xiaomi Mi 7 is expected to be equipped with a 5.65-inch full HD display, with a notch, metal and glass body, dual camera setup, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with OIS and 4K video recording, at least 6GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of internal storage , dual SIM card slot, 4G LTE, Gigabit Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, stereo speakers, fingerprint reader, USB Type-C port, dust and waterproof and wireless charging technology. It will be run MIUI 10 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. MIUI 10 is said to focus on AI and device learning to improve software performance.
