Tablet vs. Smartphones – Do you Need a Tablet, Smartphone, or Both?

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonAugust 24, 2021
Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

Tablets and smartphones are two very commonly used gadgets in everyday life. Both are used for similar purposes, but you can still find a lot of differences between them, the major one being the size. It is common knowledge that smartphones are much smaller than tablets and people use each to suit their convenience.  Thinking of tablets as bigger versions of smartphones is not a good idea as each has its own features. They are used by different sets of people for different purposes. There are a lot of things to consider before buying a tablet or a smartphone. Let us take a closer look at the two devices through a comparison.

    History Of Tablets And Smartphones

A tablet has a mobile operating system and touchscreen and can be thought of like a mini personal computer with a few limitations. It is operated using fingertips or a digital pen for ease of operation. A tablet came into form by the end of the 20th century, but it got real popular when the Apple iPad was released in 2010. Soon after it took off as a commonly used gadget for work and education.

A smartphone is a mobile device that can be used as a phone and a personal computer. With stronger hardware functionalities and operating systems, smartphones are actually smarter than normal mobile phones. The first smartphone was the ‘Angler’ developed in 1992, and later in 1994, a better version came into existence, named Simon Personal Communicator. After that, many technological developments like better batteries and improved mobile data networks led to the large-scale production of smartphones in the 2000s.

Due to their capabilities and accessibility, smartphones and tablets are easily spread all over the world and provide their users with more opportunities to communicate and obtain information. For instance, clothes made in China are currently available in the U.S., and films shown at French festivals are now also available in Russia. In the Middle East where online casinos are banned, more than 45% of the local population now have access to any popular gaming websites.

In the world of premium smartphones, it was not a battle between Apple and Android, but rather a battle between Apple and Samsung. Apple laid the foundation for the modern smartphone and still remains the most sought-after gadget in the class of premium smartphones. Since 2007 it was one-actor theater which lasted for three years, and, eventually, the Samsung Galaxy S appeared.

    Pros Of Tablets

Tablets are great if you want to work for longer hours with the device. Since it is larger in size, it offers better visibility of pictures and videos. This is more so important if you want to do things like editing visual content. Tablets score better when it comes to battery life. Some tablets even have better battery life than laptops, making them work beyond their limits.  Reading and writing on larger screens is always better as tablets and smartphones don’t have physical keyboards. It will do your eyes good if you are viewing larger fonts while reading documents. Tablets are suited for this, too, as you would surely end up with sore eyes if smartphones were used instead.  A tablet will be the best choice to have a superior gaming experience. Smartphones may not deliver that great graphics and sound experience, which makes the games truly an experience.

    Pros Of Smartphones

Tablets are best used at home or office as they are not easy to carry around. Smartphones are more portable as they are smaller in size and very handy to use. Making calls and sending and receiving messages is super easy with smartphones, as these are what phones primarily do. They are also equipped with better cameras that can capture images of better quality.

    Cons Of Tablets

Most tablets do not have ports like HDMI and USB, making it impossible to connect to other devices. They don’t even have the flash memory ports to insert a memory card. This makes them a little less desirable as data transfer is very important in the digital era. As is obvious, tablets are cumbersome and not easy to take with you on every trip. In fact, they would require separate storage space, unlike smartphones, which can easily fit into pockets.

    Cons Of Smartphones

Though smaller in size, most smartphones are more expensive than tablets that come with similar features. They are sometimes twice as costly as tablets making tablets more pocket-friendly. There are a few applications that don’t run on smartphones but can be easily operated on a tablet. Smartphones make it difficult when you have to work on different windows at the same time. Even the virtual keyboard takes good screen space. As the screen size is small, not many applications can be made visible simultaneously. This can increase the amount of effort needed to do tasks lowering your overall productivity.

    The Bottom Line

Although tablets and smartphones look similar, their uses are entirely different. A lot depends upon where the end-user is planning to use the device, what type of data he will be managing, and the like. The differences in these gadgets are what make them unique and satisfying to the respective audience.
