At the new event held in China this evening, Samsung unveiled the W22 5G. Basically, this is essentially a renamed version of the Galaxy Z Fold3 sold in other markets, but the Samsung W22 5G is a special version only sold in the Chinese market.
As is tradition, Samsung’s W-series is a smartphone with a clamshell folding design. China is also the only market where Samsung still sells clamshell folding devices like the popular phones of early 2000. Since 2019, Samsung has brought the design of the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Fold-up. W series and turn this into a super high-end smartphone line.
Like its predecessor Samsung W21 5G, Samsung W22 5G has a folding screen design and supports S Pen. This rookie uses Snapdragon 888 chip and other top features such as 5G connectivity, hidden camera under the screen, support for 120 Hz refresh rate on both internal and external screens.
The screen of the Samsung W22 5G is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, and the overall device has a glossy black tone with gold accents on the hinge. Samsung says that this pearl-patterned hinge is applied with a high-precision PCD metal cutting process, and is polished and abraded at the nanoscale.
Specifically, the small screen outside has a size of 6.2 inches with a resolution of 2260 x 832 pixels and a pixel density of 387 ppi, while the large screen inside is up to 7.6 inches (2208 x 1768 pixels, 374 ppi). Eco2 OLED panels are used for both Samsung W22 5G displays, which reduces power consumption.
Samsung W22 5G also becomes the first W series phone with hidden camera technology under the screen, using a 4MP image sensor and supporting high-definition selfie photography. Moving to the back, this folding screen smartphone is integrated with 3 cameras: 12MP main wide-angle + 12MP telephoto + 12MP super wide-angle.
The back of the Samsung W22 5G is printed with the 心系天下 (Heart to the World) symbol with a unique light effect when viewed from different angles. And yet, the back of the device is also finished from high-quality ceramic, which is more durable and harder than the glass on the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G. The remaining features of this phone, include: IPX8 waterproof, 4400mAh battery, support for 25 W wired fast charging, 10 W wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.
Users in China can pre-order the Samsung W22 5G from 10 am on October 14, 2021, for 16,999 yuan (nearly $2642), 3000 yuan (about $466) cheaper than the previous generation. The product officially opened for sale from October 22, 2021.
