iPhone 18 Pro Rumored to Be Up to 2mm Thicker, Signaling a Shift Toward Better Cameras and Battery Life

Apple’s next-generation flagship could mark a notable departure from recent design trends. According to the latest supply chain reports, iPhone 18 Pro is expected to become significantly thicker than its predecessor, with the extra space reportedly dedicated to major camera upgrades and a larger battery.

If the rumors prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro could represent Apple’s most substantial increase in device thickness in years, prioritizing performance and endurance over an ultra-slim profile.

    A Noticeably Thicker Design

According to information shared by Chinese tech leaker Instant Digital, citing sources linked to supplier Tata Electronics, the iPhone 18 Pro may increase in thickness by approximately 2mm compared with the current generation.

The device is rumored to grow from the 8.75mm thickness of the iPhone 17 Pro to somewhere between 9.9mm and 10.9mm, making it one of Apple’s thickest flagship smartphones since the introduction of the iPhone X.

    For historical comparison:

    • iPhone 4: 9.3mm
    • iPhone 3GS: 12.3mm
    • Current iPhone 17 Pro: 8.75mm
    • Rumored iPhone 18 Pro: 9.9–10.9mm

While modern smartphones have generally become thinner over the years, Apple may now be reversing that trend in favor of practical hardware improvements.

Variable Aperture Camera Could Be the Biggest Upgrade

The primary reason behind the thicker chassis is believed to be an all-new camera system.

Industry reports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro will become the first iPhone to feature a variable aperture main camera, allowing the lens to mechanically adjust its aperture depending on lighting conditions and photographic needs.

Unlike fixed-aperture smartphone cameras, a variable aperture system offers several advantages:

    • Better low-light performance
    • Improved control over depth of field
    • Enhanced portrait photography
    • Greater flexibility across different shooting environments

However, this technology also requires additional mechanical components, increasing the physical size of the camera module.

Reports indicate that the new variable aperture module could cost around 50% more than Apple’s current fixed-aperture camera system.

Camera Module Expected to Grow Larger

Beyond the aperture mechanism itself, Apple is also rumored to be redesigning the sensor layout and optical image stabilization hardware.

These internal changes are expected to make the rear camera module noticeably thicker, contributing to the overall increase in device dimensions.

Rather than minimizing the camera bump, Apple appears to be using the additional internal space to accommodate more advanced imaging hardware.

Bigger Battery May Deliver Longer Battery Life

Battery capacity is another factor reportedly driving the thicker design.

Certification information suggests the following battery capacities:

    iPhone 18 Pro

    • China version: 4,056mAh
    • U.S. version: 4,288mAh

    iPhone 18 Pro Max

    • China version: 5,391mAh
    • U.S. version: 5,567mAh

While regional battery ratings often differ due to regulatory certification methods, both versions are expected to offer meaningful increases over the previous generation.

Combined with Apple’s continued improvements in chip efficiency, the larger batteries could translate into significantly longer real-world battery life.

New “Dark Cherry” Color Reportedly on the Way

In addition to hardware upgrades, Apple is expected to introduce a new flagship color option called Dark Cherry.

According to current reports, the finish resembles a rich cherry red or deep burgundy tone, offering a more understated appearance than brighter red colorways seen in previous Apple products.

The distinctive color is expected to become one of the headline finishes for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

    Launch Expected This September

Apple is widely expected to unveil the iPhone 18 series during its traditional September product launch event.

While the company has yet to confirm any specifications, multiple supply chain reports suggest that this year’s Pro models will place greater emphasis on camera performance, battery life, and overall functionality—even if that means moving away from the industry’s long-standing pursuit of ever-thinner smartphones.

    Final Thoughts

The rumored design changes suggest Apple may be entering a new phase of smartphone development, where practical improvements take priority over achieving the slimmest possible profile.

A thicker chassis could provide room for a more advanced variable aperture camera, a substantially larger battery, and other internal upgrades that directly enhance the user experience. Although these reports remain unofficial, the iPhone 18 Pro is shaping up to be one of Apple’s most significant hardware redesigns in recent years if the leaks prove accurate.
