Top Ways to Create Awesome PowerPoint Presentations

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonMarch 29, 2021

The ability to produce effective, attention-grabbing, and entertaining presentations that serve as an aid and not a distraction, is a skill that is useful across multiple domains. From academics and managers to marketing and design professionals, the ability to create awesome PowerPoint presentations can make that small difference that can help you get a positive response from your audience. The benefits of using PowerPoint presentations are plenty, they are quick and easy to update and can make your presentation visually interesting and appealing. To be able to create an effective PowerPoint presentation you should not only have a good grasp of the tools available on PowerPoint, but you should also pay attention to the process of the presentation, in addition to maintaining a consistent style throughout. Making an effective, relevant, and engaging presentation goes way beyond simply putting together a bunch of slides. Here are some best ways to create awesome PowerPoint presentations.

Understand Your Audience and Tailor Your Presentation

Not every audience is the same. A presentation that may get great feedback from a particular audience may only get a lukewarm response from another. If you are pitching a new product, you cannot expect the same presentation to impress both an audience consisting of engineers and developers and another audience consisting of marketing professionals. Knowing your audience and tailoring your presentation according to them is crucial. So the first thing you need to do is understand your audience and know what kind of members it consists of. Once you know who all your audience includes, you need to account for the knowledge level of your audience before setting out to create a presentation for them. This is one aspect that a lot of people often overlook while preparing presentations.

    Prepare an Outline

Having an outline ready before setting about working on the presentation can help you chart out the flow of your presentation. Once you have the outline planned, you can easily convert it into a sequence of slides. Without a preplanned outline, it is difficult to keep the flow of your presentation organized which can make it hard to follow and confuse your audience.

    Use a Color Pallet

The simplest way of keeping your slides visually appealing is to use a color pallet. Using a color pallet will help ensure that the colors you use blend well with each other and do not stick out like a sore thumb. Color pallets for company presentations are often chosen to be similar to the color pallet of the brand. Color pallets are often also chosen based on the theme of the presentation.

    Use a Professional Template

A straightforward and easy approach to ensuring that your presentations are visually appealing, easy to understand, and consistent throughout is to use presentation templates. Using templates to design your slides can help you save a lot of time in terms of deciding a layout and a color pallet. Further, these templates include graphs and images which can help you visually express your content. They also include icons that can be used to replace text and make your presentation less distracting.

    Use Images and Avoid Text

No one wants to look at a slide that is full of text. Too much text in a slide can distract the members of the audience from what the presenter is saying. Further, with too many words on the slide, the presenter tends to read from the slide, making the presentation less interactive and often boring. Putting the right images and graphs in the slide that relate to the comments of the presenter can help the audience focus better and keep the presentation interesting. While doing so you must ensure that you use images of high resolution that do not pixelate and always cite the source of the same. Sometimes when presentations are projected using a projector, some of the colors can appear washed out. This is something you must account for while selecting the images and even the color pallet discussed in the previous point.

    Limit The Animations

Animations in a presentation can be a useful tool, but using transitions too often can make it tiring and often irritating for the audience. Animations should be used where they serve a purpose and help you express a point. For example, using an animated graph that charts out the change in stock prices with time can make it easier for the audience to follow the trend. Similarly, ensuring that your bullet points appear in the sequence in which you describe and explain them can keep the audience focused on the right point. But using animations for transitioning from one slide to the next, when that transition does not serve a function, can distract the audience.

    Practice, Practice, Practice!

So you followed the tips described and came up with a brilliant presentation. But the work does not end there. The most important part of a successful presentation is the presenter. In order to keep your audience engaged, you need to speak clearly, to the point, at the right pace, and avoid any stutters. You must be the focus of the attention of your audience and your presentation must only serve as a visual aid. The only time the audience should focus on the presentation instead of you is when you ask them to. Your presentation must never exceed the allotted time limit, and you must pace yourself throughout the presentation. If you go too slow at the beginning, you may have to hurry up later, causing you to miss out on some points which may affect the flow of the presentation. The best way of achieving this is to practice. Practice your speech as many times as you can.

There are various aspects to a successful and effective PowerPoint presentation. But keeping your audience engaged requires a lot more than just putting together a set of beautiful slides. From the flow of the presentation to its pace, for a presentation to be perfect, a lot of things have to come together. Practicing your presentation beforehand can make a huge difference. Keep these points in mind, and you are bound to leave a positive impression on your audience.
