As with most reasonably priced midrange smartphones nowadays we expect the standard specs of an Octacore processor, 2-3GB of RAM and 16 Rom, along with a 2500-3000mah battery with some form of quick charging and a basic 5-5.5inch (typically 720p) screen. The Umi Plus maybe one of the few exceptions to those expectations above.
Umi presents us with the Umi Plus Phablet that goes beyond the typical midrange mold that most other manufacturers use. The Umi plus sports some very impressive specs starting with one of Mediatek’s newest CPUs, the MT6755M, Helio P10 Octa-core running at 1.8ghz. Umi is also very generous in providing us with 4GB of Samsung EMMC DDR3 onboard RAM & 32GB Memory. This should be more than enough for any user, however if the internal memory isn’t enough for you, it is expandable upto 256gb via Transflash / MicroSD card.
Beyond that, we have a beautiful and Sharp, pardon the pun, 1080p FHD 5.5 inch Sharp Brand display. This display is protected by what we hope is Gorilla Glass, although it is not mentioned. On quick inspection it offers great viewing angles regardless of lighting conditions.
What good is a powerful CPU and gorgeous FHD screen without a battery that allows you to go about your everyday activities while not having to worry about battery life? This is one of the biggest challenges that modern phone manufacturers face. Well you can be rest assured that battery life will be the least of your worries with your Umi Plus. They included a large 4000mAh Sony Battery which is supposed to last 2 days of regular usage, 15 hours of Gaming and 17 hours of video playback. That’s just AWESOME! Furthermore this large battery is supported by MediaTek’s Pump Express+ technology which they claim will give you a full day’s of usage on only ½ hour of charging, while a full charge will take 100 minutes. These numbers are quite impressive when we compare this with most other midrange phones that will take upwards of 2 hours to fully charge their devices.
As smartphones become more and more of our everyday lives, they are too a great example of the convergence of technologies. In the not so distant past, we had to carry our cell phones for calls, a CD/Tape/Minidisc player for our music, and a separate camera for taking pictures. With the advent of smartphones we are spoiled by the fact that all these features are expected. Thinking along these lines Umi decided to do give us a backfacing 13mp Samsung PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus) image sensor with dual tone flash as well as a 5mp front facing camera for selfies & Google Duo. That’s not all, Umi also did away with customized proprietary versions of Android and decided to go with Pure Android 6.0. This gives you the quickest access to OTA updates/patches and new OS updates (when they are pushed by Google), without having to wait for your manufacturer to test and push out the update themselves. To be honest, we are tired of some manufacturers’ lack of support and updates to their phones after the are released. This is by far one of the biggest benefits of the Umi Plus over most other phones out there.
Lastly and most important is the Umi Plus’ connectivity. It offers Blutooth 4.1, Wifi 802.11a/b/g/n running at both 2.4ghz as well as 5ghz. In terms of cellular connectivity, the Plus offers :
2G: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
3G: WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100MHz
4G: FDD-LTE 800/1800/2100/2600MHz
This should allow you to use this phone regardless of where your travels / work may take you.
So overall, this phone seems to meet and exceed our expectations of what a midrange phablet smartphone should offer. We have a great Helio P10 CPU and Sharp FHD display that is supported by a large 4000mAh Sony battery. With 4GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM which will give you the flexibility to run all your everyday apps while also giving you enough space to store your music and the great pictures (we hope) taken from the Samsung 13mp back facing camera with dual-tone flash.
