Apple Watch Ultra 4 is not simply a battery-life upgrade. Apple’s latest rugged smartwatch combines a redesigned Health Sensing System with more frequent heart and HRV measurements, a new Readiness feature, improved workout tracking, faster charging and a longer-lasting battery.
The Ultra 4 keeps Apple’s focus on outdoor sports and endurance activities, but the bigger change is how much more data the watch can collect and turn into useful daily feedback. It is available in natural and black titanium, with pre-orders beginning September 9 and general availability starting September 18, 2026.
The Health Sensing System Is the Biggest Upgrade
The most important change inside Apple Watch Ultra 4 is its new Health Sensing System.
Apple says the system combines new optical and electrical heart sensors with the S11 chip to deliver its most accurate heart-rate sensing in a wearable. The company also says the system was evaluated in a study involving more than 1,000 participants. And it says the Apple Watch Ultra 4 is designed to play a more important role in health and fitness tracking.

For everyday monitoring, Ultra 4 can measure heart rate every five seconds throughout the day. That is particularly useful because the watch is collecting information passively rather than relying only on measurements taken during workouts.
Heart-rate variability has also received a major upgrade. Apple says HRV can now be measured up to 24 times more often, with separate views for Recovery HRV and overall HRV. The watch also adds daytime vitals alongside overnight measurements, making it easier to see whether changes are occurring during the day rather than only while sleeping.
This makes Ultra 4 more interesting as a long-term health and recovery tracker, rather than simply another device for counting steps and recording workouts.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 also benefits from Apple’s expanding Apple Intelligence ecosystem, bringing more intelligent features and AI-powered capabilities to the wearable experience.
Readiness Turns Health Data Into a Daily Recommendation
Collecting more data is only useful if users can understand what to do with it. That is where Apple’s new Readiness feature comes in.
Readiness analyzes recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep score, then produces a daily score from 0 to 10. Instead of leaving users to interpret multiple health measurements themselves, Ultra 4 provides recommendations such as Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It.
The score can also change during the day as new information becomes available. A demanding workout or a change in daytime vitals can therefore affect the recommendation.

This is arguably a more meaningful upgrade than simply adding another health metric. Ultra 4 is moving toward interpreting several signals together and turning them into an actionable recommendation.
Better HRV Tracking Could Make Recovery Data More Useful
HRV has become an increasingly important metric for people who monitor training and recovery, but a single measurement does not necessarily tell the whole story.
Ultra 4’s higher-frequency HRV measurements give Apple more data points to work with. Recovery HRV can be used to identify daily changes associated with stress and recovery, while overall HRV provides a broader view.
Apple also compares overnight recovery HRV against a user’s personal baseline. This is important because individual HRV values can vary considerably, meaning that a personal trend can be more useful than comparing one number with somebody else’s result.
For athletes, this could make Ultra 4’s health features more practical for deciding when to push harder and when to take recovery more seriously.

Battery Life Finally Moves Beyond the Two-Day Mark
Battery life remains one of the strongest reasons to choose the Ultra line over a standard Apple Watch.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 provides up to 50 hours of everyday battery life, compared with the previous generation’s 42-hour rating. Low Power Mode extends that figure to as much as 84 hours.
The workout figures are also important:
- Up to 25 hours with Extended Workout mode and full GPS and heart-rate readings
- Up to 45 hours with Max Extended Workout mode
- Up to 18 hours of additional battery life from a 15-minute charge

Apple has also redesigned the pedometer model used by Ultra 4.
The new system combines machine-learning algorithms with the S11 chip to improve distance measurements during indoor walking and running workouts. Apple also says it improves all-day step counting.
This is a relatively less dramatic feature than the new health sensors, but it demonstrates Apple’s broader approach with Ultra 4: improve the quality of the data being collected before using that data for health and fitness insights.
S11 Brings More Than a Performance Boost
The S11 chip is another important part of Ultra 4’s upgrade.
Besides supporting the new health-sensing architecture, Apple says the chip enables new Audio Intelligence features that are arriving later this year. These features are designed to help users stay aware of important sounds and remember key moments from conversations.
That gives the S11 a broader role than simply making apps open faster. It provides part of the processing foundation for Ultra 4’s health, fitness and intelligent features.
The Health App Is Becoming More Personalized
Apple is also expanding the software experience beyond the watch itself.
A redesigned Health app is scheduled to arrive later this year with new Insights and Longevity sections. The Longevity tab will include Health Age, while Insights will bring together information covering areas such as heart health, sleep, readiness, fitness and vitals.
However, these features should not be confused with features available immediately on launch. Apple says the redesigned Health app will arrive later this year, initially in U.S. English.
That distinction is important for buyers: some of the broader health experience advertised around Ultra 4 is part of a future software update rather than something that will necessarily be available on day one.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 vs Ultra 3: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
The Ultra 4 looks more like an evolution than a complete redesign.
The biggest reasons for existing Ultra owners to consider upgrading are the new Health Sensing System, higher-frequency HRV measurements, Readiness, improved step tracking, the S11 chip and longer battery life.
The battery improvement is particularly easy to understand. Ultra 4 reaches up to 50 hours of everyday use, while Ultra 3 was rated for up to 42 hours.
For someone who already owns an Ultra 3 and mainly uses it for notifications, basic fitness tracking and occasional workouts, the upgrade may be less compelling.
For endurance athletes or users who actively monitor recovery and health trends, however, the combination of more frequent sensing, Readiness and longer workout battery life makes the Ultra 4 considerably more interesting.
Who Should Buy the Apple Watch Ultra 4?
The Ultra 4 makes the most sense for three groups of users.
First, endurance athletes can benefit from longer workout tracking and the 45-hour Max Extended Workout mode.
Second, outdoor users get the combination of long battery life, GPS tracking and Apple’s rugged Ultra design.
Third, health and recovery-focused users may find the new sensing system and Readiness feature more useful than the traditional smartwatch features.
For casual Apple Watch owners, the standard Apple Watch Series 12 may be a more appropriate option because the Ultra 4’s biggest advantages are aimed at users who can actually take advantage of its endurance and advanced tracking capabilities.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 Is More About Data Than Design
Apple did not dramatically change the physical identity of the Ultra series with Ultra 4. Instead, the company focused on what happens underneath the familiar rugged design.
The new Health Sensing System collects heart-rate and HRV information more frequently, Readiness turns multiple signals into a simple daily recommendation, the S11 chip supports new intelligent features, and the larger battery extends the amount of time users can spend tracking activities without reaching for a charger.
That makes Apple Watch Ultra 4 an interesting upgrade for people who want their smartwatch to do more than record workouts. Its real advantage is the combination of continuous sensing, recovery analysis, endurance tracking and longer battery life in one device.
For buyers coming from an older Apple Watch, those improvements may be more meaningful than the unchanged overall design suggests.
