What Do You Need To Start A Podcast?

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonJune 4, 2021

We’re glad to have you onboard the podcast industry! And since starting could be challenging, we’ve decided to help you out by picking the things you need to watch out for as you trail this journey.

With Podcast How To tips, you could never go wrong with hitting that record button!

    Step 1: Pick a name

If you’re starting a podcast, you have to grant it a name since this allows your audience to be familiar with the topics you’ll be discussing regularly.

You would want to pick a broad name, so you could have the opportunity to switch on different topics if you’d like that is still consistent with the idea of your podcast.

So, if you like to focus on outdoor activities like mountain hiking, you could choose the name that draws the image of the outdoors in your audience’s minds.

Don’t forget that the originality of the podcast title might be necessary. Still, it would help if you wouldn’t go overboard with it, making it hard to pronounce or too unique that would likely be forgotten soon enough.

Step 2: Choose the topic you’re fond of

It’s crucial that you only focus on the topics you love because podcasts take a significant amount of your time and demand effort on your end.

Don’t be fooled by the idea that complex topics would quickly build your fanbase. Remember that if you’re not an expert or an enthusiast of the subject, you won’t last a minute in sharing your thoughts about it with others.

People listen to the podcast because they want to find a community that shares their interests, and if you’re not one of them, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to keep their attention.

So, don’t be intimidated by big brands who take on challenging subjects in their released episodes and put your energy into giving away a new perspective into the subject matter you and your audience care about.

Step 3: Have the right gears.

You can’t correctly start your podcast without having the right gears. So, invest in a laptop that is compatible with your budget, like an Acer laptop perhaps.

The company usually makes their laptops with the features of a 15″ display screen along with a reliable dual-core processor, such as Ryzen 3 and built-in ports to help you quickly connect the equipment.

Under 350 bucks, you could get yourself a laptop that has a battery lifespan of around 8 hours and give you lots of space for editing.

Additionally, you would need to have a microphone for your recording sessions. Browse through the listings of Amazon, and you might come across a set of durable steel housings and a broadcast arm with your microphone. For a recommendation, you could check out Heil PR 40 for only $399!

Step 4: Follow the format of your choice.

Have you already decided what format you want to follow for your podcast episodes? If not, then you can always search for top content creators to gain an idea of what top podcasts include in their intros, how they formulate their content, and how long each of their episodes goes on.

Just because someone listens to your podcast for a 30-minute drive doesn’t mean that you should prolong the discussion based on that timetable. Remember that as long as you could keep your audience engaged with what you’re saying, it wouldn’t matter if you release a 5-minute or 6-hours podcast episode.

Plus, keep in mind the style you’d want to incorporate. For example, would you invite guests for an interview? Or would you prefer to use another style?

Think outside the box, and everything would be possible!

Step 5: Find the best spot.

What makes podcasts fascinating is their flexibility.

You could record the episode everywhere! But the sweetest spot is typically the quiet places like an office room or studios to minimize distractions, such as white noises. If you have extra cash, soundproofing walls could help.

It’s best to remember that aside from the final output, the behind-the-scenes are crucial in the success of your podcast. So, make it entertaining for you and your co-host as much as you can.
