Design
Once we have the FiiO K5 Pro in hand, we find ourselves before a DAC/AMP made on a CNC modeled aluminum body that offers average dimensions and weight as indicated by its measurements of 120.5 x 130 x 55 mm and its 436 grams. It is therefore not an ultra-portable model, like the FiiO E10K for example, but neither is it something that we cannot move like a DAC/AMPMagic 200M.
The FiiO K5 Pro is built beautifully with an all-aluminum body that is repeatedly polished with CNC and is then finished with anodizing and sandblasting. The device looks and feels very smooth with a fine texture. The beautiful volume knob has a surrounding RGB light which indicated the file format being played, for cd-quality FLAC files it lights blue, for Hi-res FLAC files it glows yellow, and for DSD it turns to green.
Hardware
The FiiO K5 Pro is equipped with powerful AK4493 DAC chip paired with an XMOS XUF208 USB receiver chip and flagship-level amplification chips including OPA1642 and TPA6120. It results in unmatched performance with monstrous output power. It can decode PCM up to 32-Bit/768kHz, and DSD up to DSD512. These powerful chips together ensure the best sound experience for its users.
Multiple Options
The FiiO K5 Pro provides its users with multiple options for audio signal input/output. Users can use USB input, Coaxial Input, RCA input, and Optical input methods while it provides output through 6.35mm output port and RCA line out port. Users can easily use it for DAC only and provide output to other amplification systems using the RCA output port.
Modes ADC Control
The FiiO K5 Pro provides accurate volume control with the NJW1195A via ADC volume control. The analog volume adjustment allows the users to adjust the volume by 0.5dB per step. It also features three gain modes, low, medium, and high which users can easily switch between with the switch on the front of the device. Low gain offers +0dB, Medium gain offers +6dB, and High gain offers +10dB.
Connectivity
On the back we find the rest of the connectivity. On the audio input side, we have a USB-B port equipped with the XMOS XUF208 chip that supports up to 768 kHz and native DSD decoding as the main connection to the computer. On the other hand, we have an optical and a coaxial input, both digital, and an analog input via RCA. In addition, to enjoy your sound on our speakers, we have an analog output via RCA.
Verdict
Fiio K5 Pro provides top decoding capabilities to 32bit/768kHz and DSD512 at an entry price of a thousand or so, which is even stronger than many high-end models. The timbre is meticulous and pleasing, a little seasoned, but not unnaturally distorted. It is suitable for listening to different genres such as vocals, pure music, pop music, and rock.
