5 Tips to Improve Fan Engagement

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonSeptember 14, 2021

The growth of sports is a massive credit to the fans. Clubs need to engage these fans because they will make more money. How to improve fan engagement will be the big question moving forward. The fans’ demands are increasing, and they are no longer limited to the experiences inside a stadium. A club needs to offer an excellent package as these fans are the core of the club. Fan engagement is the most crucial factor here. What is the reason? Because fans are driving revenues. You will understand why most revenues come from media income, ticket sales, sponsorship, and merchandising if you know that. The fans are driving revenue sent; so, how do you keep fans?

    On-Site Experience

Fans want to have a unique experience at the stadium. They need high service and convenience levels both inside and out of the stadium. You can bet they won’t come back if you aren’t correct. Virtual reality will probably take away some market share from clubs and stadiums in the future as they compete with other events. Therefore, clubs and stadiums must improve their service and fan engagement levels. Here are ways that you can engage the fan in the stadium.

    1. Upgrade Stadiums

The main pillars of the future stadium are technology, safety, convenience, and service. A fan will not require anything more than that. He wants to have a wonderful experience. He wants to place an order from his seat, connect with friends, and get the latest news. He definitely would like to have fun. The stadium needs to be safe, secured, and comfortable, and the seats should give a good view. People are interested in high-quality games. An exciting atmosphere is what they expect. Meeting the basics isn’t enough to make fans want to watch the game elsewhere. Fans look forward to better reasons to leave their homes, and sports teams are looking for more sophisticated ways to get them to do so.

    2. Provide exclusive offers that they can only avail in the stadium

Stadiums and club owners have to create an experience that fans can not find anywhere else than at the venue with alternative ways to view a game. There are ways in which they can create this. Fans want to make memories and share them with their friends. They could take a picture of themselves and their friends with a hologram image of their favorite player just before the game starts.

An interesting example is what the Tampa Bay Lightning did a few years ago. The club came up with a way to make and sell jerseys with a chip in them. Imagine the outcome: a true win-win. Fans can get special discounts, participate in lotteries, connect with sponsors, win special prizes and play games through this microchip. Furthermore, the atmosphere in the stadium is excellent because of the blue-colored jerseys. This strategy is beneficial for the club as well as its sponsors. They will be able to raise revenues once again by collecting data and increasing merchandising revenues.

    Off-site Experience

Some fans prefer watching the game outside the stadium on matchdays. If they don’t fit in the stadium or venue, they want a piece of the pie outside as well. Here are ideas to increase engagement even while at their homes or anywhere they prefer to watch a game outside the stadium:

    3. You can organize events outside the stadium.

Good fan engagement is likely to be achieved through social interaction. Outside the stadium, fans watch a game or event together in a bar or cafe with their friends. There should be clubs that are innovative in facilitating such events. There is a world to be gained when a club hosts an event in a local setting or organizes a fan party around establishments worldwide. Besides, global fan engagement is also better than local. Nowadays, fans are getting global, so it’s a good idea to use this.

    4. Facilitate the use of virtual and augmented reality.

It is going to be there. It’s better to be a first-mover than follow the crowd. Over time, watching a virtual reality game will become more critical. Covid 19 will speed this process along. It has created a mentality that they will choose this option if the viewing experience at home gets better. In the future, watching a game from a virtual environment will no longer be an exception as augmented and virtual reality improves. Extra revenues and fan engagement are what it means for the clubs. You can at least maximize the game off-site through these technologies.

    5. New fans are attracted to alternative media.

Social media, streaming, and TV all exist to improve fan engagement. Social media apps make fan engagement easier during the off-season. Clubs should not underestimate how important this is to connect with fans, not only on match day but throughout the year. Nowadays, the new fan isn’t interested in watching television. Generation Z and Generation Alpha are on the internet. They are interested in new social media apps and streaming platforms.

Digital transformation will be the magic formula for fan engagement as we advance. Fans of the future are called digitals. They will use the new toolkits of phones, tablets, and streaming platforms. There are new forms of communication that clubs can use with traditional and fresh content. This area will gain ground as sports organizations realize this is a unique additional source of revenue.
