With speed, power, style, and portability, nothing can resist the allure of the Dell Alienware M15 R5 Notebook, the ultimate gaming laptop that will accompany you to conquer every peak. The Alienware M15 R5 offers plenty of memory and a fast graphics card. The test shows how the little alien can be played.
Design & Display
The 272.5 x 356.2 x 22.85 mm 15-inches does not necessarily belong to the lightweights of its class. A little over 2.4 kg is announced, plus the quite voluminous power supply. The design can collect a lot of points for this. The dark gray notebook with subtle lighting is stylish. We like the surface coating, which is almost completely resistant to fingerprints. The workmanship makes an overall solid impression, only the display frame doesn’t appeal to us.
The Dell Alienware M15 R5 monitor is ideally designed for international competitive gaming. Ultra-fast 165Hz refresh rate, support for G-Sync technology that synchronizes the refresh rate of the display and GPU, for smoother visuals than ever before. See your favorite game characters on the stunning Full HD display, with vibrant colors and incredibly thin bezels. In addition, this screen also has a feature to reduce blue light emissions, helping you comfortably entertain for a long time without worrying about eyestrain.
Let’s get to the inner workings. The AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX turns out to be a powerful alternative to the Intel CPUs and is roughly on par with the desktop CPUs i9-9900KF and R7 3700X in Cinebench 15. That’s quite a bit of power and should be enough for all games and applications. The eight-core processor is supported by 16 GB DDR4-3200 from Hynix.
In addition to the Radeon onboard chip, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 in the notebook version takes care of the graphics. Ideal for Full HD applications and games and therefore also a perfect match for the display. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla as a complex open-world game ran in the test with maximum details and 1080p resolution with around 54 fps. In the ray tracing benchmark Port Royale, the card roughly matches the performance of the RTX 2080 MaxQ from the previous generation. It should be noted here that the full gaming performance is only achieved in mains operation; the battery alone throttles noticeably in favor of the runtime. A 512GB PCIe M.2 NVMe SSD from Toshiba with solid, fast data transfer serves as the drive, expansion options are available.
The keyboard is backlit, in RGB, the user can choose the colors he wants. However, if the latter is practical, the trackpad does not join the idea of the Dell XPS, the trackpad of the Alienware m15 is really small, just practical for browsing the internet but nothing more.
As is typical for Dell, there are many connections. In addition to the power connection, there is also an HDMI 2.1 connection, a USB-C, and a USB 3.1 connection on the smartly illuminated back. There are two more USB ports on the right side. There is also a network cable on the left for a more stable Internet connection. There is also an audio interface for the gaming headset, for example. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 are of course also on board as wireless connection options.
A big advantage of the AMD processor over the Intel competition: The battery life of the Alienware M15 R5 is one of the longest in the test at almost 7.5 hours. It also lasts longer during gaming than the competitors in the comparison. The battery life here is just over two hours. The R5 also beats its big brother, the R4, in this discipline. This only lasts for just under two hours when working and 55 minutes when playing.
Verdict & Buy
The Alienware M15 R5 is a good overall package that offers convincing gaming performance for Full HD thanks to the GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card. However, it is not enough for the high 4K resolution. The workmanship and screen resolution also leaves a lot to be desired.
