Common Cybersecurity Tools and What They Do

As you spend more time on the Internet, you also face more digital threats. To protect your online security and privacy, you must use the following cybersecurity options:

    #1 Advanced Antivirus Software

Only advanced antivirus software can protect your computer and devices against various malware like viruses, worms, Trojan horses, adware, spyware, stalkerware, and ransomware.

Advanced antivirus software works a little differently than regular antivirus software. It uses Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in order to recognize and remediate emerging malware threats. The best antivirus software is in demand from consumers and companies alike.

    #2 Firewalls

A firewall is a network security system that controls incoming and outgoing traffic based on your security rules. Think of it as a barrier that shields your network from unwanted guests. You should enable the firewall on your router as the first line of defense and the firewall on your operating system as a second defense line.

Remember, firewalls don’t make your network invulnerable. You can invite a malware infection when you willingly click a malicious link on an email or visit a compromised or untrustworthy website.

    #3 Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)

A Virtual Private Network is a service that allows you to connect to the Internet through a secure tunnel. When you connect to the Internet with a VPN, you use a VPN server’s IP address rather than your own, leaving you virtually untraceable.

Only the best subscription-based VPN services like Malwarebytes VPN can encrypt your data, mask your location, secure your network, and provide you with blazing fast servers across the world. In addition, the right VPN service will never retain or log any information related to web traffic, DNS requests, IP addresses, bandwidth, or network connections.

This is important because many free VPNs spy on you, sell your information and your bandwidth, and blast you with pop-up ads. Free VPNs have a challenging business model because running a VPN requires resources. Without a subscription fee, they rely on shady tactics to generate revenue.

    #4 Password Managers

A sophisticated password is an excellent way to keep cybercriminals out of your accounts. In fact, experts recommend that you have a unique password for each account.

Admittedly, it is challenging to remember multiple 12-character passwords that feature lower case letters, upper case letters, numbers, and symbols. A good password manager can generate perfect passwords for all of your accounts and save them for easy access on encrypted servers.

    #5 Common Sense

While common sense isn’t a conventional cybersecurity tool, it’s undoubtedly your best defense. Use common sense to avoid traps designed to steal your confidential data. For example, you can use your wits to protect yourself from phishing attacks.

Use your common sense on social media accounts too. Avoid sharing personal details with the public and choose your Internet friends wisely. Cybercriminals can use pieces of your information to commit a variety of financial crimes, including identity theft and blackmail.

These are five common tools you should use to secure your privacy and data on the Internet. With so many shields around your digital footprint, you’ll stay safe from most threats.
