Google’s Bard AI Chatbot: A New Era in Customer Service?

Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

In February 2023, Google released its latest conversational AI, Bard, designed to improve its chatbot’s responses to misinformation. Google has been working hard to enhance the chatbot’s capabilities since its debut on Twitter. While the company has recently added generative AI capabilities to almost all of its services, access to the Bard chatbot has remained exclusive to a select few. However, the company has announced that it will now open access to more US and UK users.

Sissie Hsiao, Google’s VP of Product, and Eli Collins, VP of Research, have invited everyone to join the waitlist at bard.google.com in a “Written by Bard Help Us” blog post. The company stated that getting feedback from a wider pool of testers is critical to improving the AI chatbot’s performance. Like ChatGPT or Microsoft’s Bing chat, users can talk to Bard using natural language as they would with a friend.

Google sees Bard as an LLM (Large Language Model) as a complementary experience to Google Search. According to the announcement, Bard’s interface looks similar to Bing AI’s, but there are a few key differences. Below each answer, Bard provides four buttons: Like, Dislike, Refresh, and a “Google it” button. Bing AI doesn’t have these features and instead uses the space below the answer as the source citation area.

Bing AI runs on OpenAI’s GPT-4, while Bard is based on a “lightweight and optimized version” of Google’s LaMDA, which the company says “will be updated with stronger, more capable models over time.” The input bar at the bottom of the screen also has a few differences. Bard has a microphone symbol at the end, indicating possible speech-to-text support, while Bing does not.

Google acknowledged that large language models like LaMDA are imperfect and will make mistakes. They even shared an example of a previous time Bard went wrong. Google said it was essential to know such challenges existed, noting that quality and security were significant considerations. Despite the potential limitations and possibilities for bugs, Google believes Bard is worth the effort, adding that it will “continue to improve Bard and add features, including programming, more languages, and a multimodal experience.”

In conclusion, Google has developed Bard as an AI chatbot to improve its responses to misinformation. Although access to the chatbot has been exclusive to a select few, Google has announced that it will now open access to more US and UK users. With the help of feedback from a wider pool of testers, Google hopes to enhance the chatbot’s capabilities and add more features to improve the user experience. Despite the potential for limitations and bugs, Google believes Bard is worth the effort and will continue improving the chatbot.
